Why are YouTube videos so dark on my computer?

I’ve turned up the brightness and contrast on my monitor until it glares, but any YouTube video depicting a night or low-light scene still looks like it was filmed in MurkoVision™. Any advice?

How does the Youtube page (other than the video) look itself? Is it normal?

One problem is that many people who upload to Youtube don’t know how to, or have the hardware/software to A) shoot proper lighting in videos, and B) optimize brightness of videos they upload.

The rest of the page is fine, and the majority of YouTube videos. But it’s like there’s no contrast at low brightness levels. For example watching most animated Batman cartoon clips is futile.

How about netflix or other sources of video? Are they fine?

It seems related to my flatscreen monitor having viewing angle issues. If I look at it from an extreme top-down view the colors look normal, but straight on it doesn’t.
