Why Aren’t You Protesting In The Streets?

A National Post letter to the editor suggests Canadians should be protesting in the streets over eighty unfilled judicial vacancies. And laments that they aren’t.

While this might be true and be problematic, it occurs to me I’m much too lazy to protest in the streets over that. I’d need a much better reason. Last time I protested in the streets was when universities raised the future cost of medical school by 400%, though this didn’t affect me personally as we were “grandfathered”.

**So, why aren’t you protesting in the streets? **

I live in a rural area. I’d have to drive to a street large enough to support protest, and even then I’d be the only one there.

Too sick.
Too hot.
Too far.
Too scared.

Like @kayaker I’d be alone.

But, are Canadians too nice for this kinda thing?

Canadians hold up signs which say things like “NOT COOL, MAN!”. We’re thrifty that way. One sign for any protest.

:face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:
I like that!!

I do better. I donate, I volunteer and I VOTE (for a real candidate).

Protestors that did none of those things- and there were a lot of them- helped put trump in office 2016.

Because I live in a well managed European country with professional governance.

Now if the local grocery stops stocking the good cremant, maybe I’ll be roused to action.

Like protesting the fact that people aren’t protesting in the streets?

I’m too lazy to email the National Post to protest people should be protesting. Like the author of that letter to the editor did. Which isn’t much at all. She should protest herself.

OK, I’ll march slowly down the driveway, retrieve the sprinkler and hose and march back, while silently contemplating the injustice of unfulfilled Canadian judicial vacancies.

Solidarity NOW!!!

I did a lot during the Trump presidency, living in DC then and all. To be honest, now I’m just kind of exhausted and waiting for my in-laws to die so that we can emigrate.

I don’t have time.

Not that I did it when I did have time.

But I definitely do not have time now.

Also, I’m not 100% convinced protests are effective.

It is in democracies, not so much in places like the US.

Street protests signal the start of social movements; in themselves, unconnected to a broader vision and action and campaign, they are unlikely to accomplish much. But they are necessary starting points.

Yes, the USA is a Representative Democracy.

Strongly disagree.

Just walked up from the pond
I could do a sit-in.

I’d hold a sign but you can’t see me from the road.

I like streets, why would I protest them?

Methinks it will need to become much more dire before the 2-3% of the populace that actually shows up in the streets will rouse themselves. Perhaps when it looks like a second Biden Administration is about to really happen.

Yeah, they’ll probably try to overthrow the government again.
