A National Post letter to the editor suggests Canadians should be protesting in the streets over eighty unfilled judicial vacancies. And laments that they aren’t.
While this might be true and be problematic, it occurs to me I’m much too lazy to protest in the streets over that. I’d need a much better reason. Last time I protested in the streets was when universities raised the future cost of medical school by 400%, though this didn’t affect me personally as we were “grandfathered”.
**So, why aren’t you protesting in the streets? **
I’m too lazy to email the National Post to protest people should be protesting. Like the author of that letter to the editor did. Which isn’t much at all. She should protest herself.
OK, I’ll march slowly down the driveway, retrieve the sprinkler and hose and march back, while silently contemplating the injustice of unfulfilled Canadian judicial vacancies.
I did a lot during the Trump presidency, living in DC then and all. To be honest, now I’m just kind of exhausted and waiting for my in-laws to die so that we can emigrate.
Street protests signal the start of social movements; in themselves, unconnected to a broader vision and action and campaign, they are unlikely to accomplish much. But they are necessary starting points.
Methinks it will need to become much more dire before the 2-3% of the populace that actually shows up in the streets will rouse themselves. Perhaps when it looks like a second Biden Administration is about to really happen.
