I think I used to be a charter member. I’ve been frequenting this board since it was on AOL. I’ve been a paying member since that started. So why don’t I get the “Charter member” status. What does one have to do to be a charter member?
You probably missed a deadline to resubscribe, letting your membership lapse (even if only for a day or two). One of the administrators can probably check for certain for you, but this would probably get more visibility to them in ATMB.
Charter members are people that were prior members when the board went pay and have an unbroken subscriber record until now.
There are also meets with bizarre and frankly humiliating rituals. Fluency in Latin is no longer required and charter members can substitute proficiency in any dead language or tribal tongue. There is a also a required course in Capra aegagrus hircus husbandry with mandatory vaccinations beforehand. Of course, the payoff for all this means that we get Charter Member under our name instead of Member and the benefits to that should be obvious to anyone.
Shagnasty is mostly correct, but he’s not privy to the 99er rituals. So you can just ignore him. We all know what REALLY is required.
walks away with a mysterious swagger
I’d rather just have everybody as a member. The Charter Member thing is a bit too port-and-cigars for my liking, and I don’t really think it suits the SDMB’s image.
There might be an argument that people who like it will be encouraged to re-up, but the discounted rate should be enough for that.
And I suspect your use of the barbaric “aren’t I” (in a thread title, no less) instead of the more grammatically acceptable “am I not,” just clinched it.
(And I, for one, like port and cigars.)
Sorry, you just didn’t cut it.
I don’t drink and I dislike cigars, so that was no incentive for me.
However, the lifetime membership in the Illuminati has come in handy a few times.
Athena! Remember you’re sworn to The Code of Silence.
Yeah, Tuba or Dex or somebody will have to find out what you did wrong, Christopher. If they can tear themselves away from the Stonecutter’s Guild meeting.
Moved from GQ to ATMB.
There’s port?
It would be a nice change from the single malt.
Have Snodgrass send me up a little of the Quinto do Noval Nacional '62.
The discounted rate that you get as a Charter Member?
Could they incorporate that into the existing VB software’s subscription dealie without having a seperate membership status?
At any rate, I like the daily reminder, because knowing me without it I’d forget about what was at stake and end up letting my membership lapse, costing me another six-pack of Bass annually. Can’t have that.
Besides, seeing it there late at night fills my head with joycean gartermembergartermembergartermembergartermember and makes for pleasant dreams.
But I’ve said too much.
Just e-mail an admin and say the following:

All will be taken care of. Trust me.
Apparently not, as your subscription expiration date is not April 28, which is what most Charter Members have; it’s in July.
It’s possible that you were a Charter Member at some point, let it lapse, and then resubscribed, that’s the only possible scenario I can see here.
I, for one, welcome our port-drinking, cigar-smoking overlords.
The goat a bit too frisky then?
