That is a thought provoking analogy.
Exactly.
Some of them may in fact get a smidgen of what they think they want at first. e.g. those jobs at that Carrier plant that Trump didn’t cause in any way but was able to take credit for. But by the time it’s over they’re gonna be hosed. Ref @control-z’s reddit quote above they may take considerable comfort that others are even more hosed. But hosed they shall be.
As I said earlier:
‘If you can’t tell that Donald Trump is a conman, congratulations. You’re the mark.’
I’ve thought about making a bunch of bumper stickers saying “I’m a Chump for Trump!” but I can’t figure out how I would convince people to buy them.
But Trump could sell them and his supporters would proudly buy them. And Trump knows this. The MAGAs think Trump admires their loyalty. The reality is Trump is laughing at them. When Trump said “I could stand In the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters” he didn’t mean he admired those voters. He was bragging about how he owned the suckers.
This narrative was debunked, I believe. It wasn’t working class whites suffering from economic depredation that gave Trump his victory. It was affluent, economically secure whites.
It was white nationalists.
The point is, people will listen to a conman who pays them attention, as opposed to a non-con-man who pays them no attention at all.
Never mind.
I especially wonder about the people who think Trump will win in a “landslide.” IMHO the term implies something like Reagan’s victory in 1984 or LBJ in 1964. The best case scenario for Trump, IMHO, is the 2016 map plus Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Nevada. That’s the only reasonable best case scenario from Trump’s standpoint. Even if that outcome occurs, that wouldn’t constitute a landslide.
If that’s talking about 2016, Hillary Clinton did talk to working-class white people. But she told them the truth; that the world had changed and their old jobs were disappearing and that she would help enact programs so they could learn new skills and adapt.
Then Donald Trump lied to them. He said he would save all their old jobs (he was lying). He said all of their problems were somebody else’s fault (he was lying) and that he would make those somebodies stop (he was lying) because he was a brilliant deal maker (he was lying) and then everything would be perfect (he was lying). And he told them they were special (he was lying) and they were entitled to special treatment (he was lying).
But a lot of people, who as I pointed out above were gullible and ignorant, thought Trump’s lies sounded better than Clinton’s truths.
Trump claims he won by a landslide in 2016. Because he’s substracting all of the imaginary fraudulent votes. He claimed there were “millions” of fraudulent votes in New Hampshire - a state with less than a million registered voters.
Yes, people will believe the lies that they want to hear, and ignore anything else.
I think you misquoted Paul Simon.
They aren’t scared because they’re insulated from reality. They ignore any information that does not fit their preconceptions. They’re sure Donnie is going to win because Donnie says he is and he did last time. Polls said Hillary would win in 2016 and she didn’t, therefore polls can be ignored.
Why did so many fall for his schtick? They probably knew deep down that the coal mines or the steel mills are not coming back. That didn’t get their vote, expressing hostility to people or groups that they hate sealed the deal. They weren’t ready for a black president and gladly lined up behind a guy who questioned his citizenship. They hate Muslims and were glad to see him trash a gold star Muslim family. They hate Hillary just because… something something emails. All the culture single issue voters- guns, abortion, gay marriage, just can’t fathom that there are people who disagree with them. They can’t wrap their brains around the concept of Biden winning, so they’re confident that it won’t happen.
What BobLibDem said. I’ve seen Trumpers casually brush off polls showing Biden with a 14-point lead, saying “Those pollsters must be really desperate to resort to such tactics” (something to that effect.) What can you say to people like that? Nothing gets through. I can understand someone putting their heart’s hopes in “The polls may be wrong” if Biden were only ahead by 4, but…14? That’s some serious head-in-the-sand stuff.
What, exactly, is so scary in the US outside of being caught in a peaceful protest after making a wrong turn? Yeah, COVID is no joke, but aside from that most things are going well.
Uh…
“While it may be correct to say the United States has some of the best healthcare services in the world, it is not accessible to all Americans equally,” says Professor Peters. “The poor, minorities and rural Americans have less access to healthcare and suffer from worse health outcomes.”
Mr Rios, who is now back to work after his own stint in hospital, is also critical: “It is really easy for him to say that while receiving the best treatment in the world. He had everything at his disposal. I don’t think he would like getting the basic treatment, like I did and many others did too.”
It always cracks my ass up reading how all you liberals think you know what makes “MAGAs” tick. Spoiler alert:
You don’t.
Sure, I’m a Trump supporter, and I’ll proudly vote for him again, and I hope he wins. But I’m not scared because it really doesn’t matter that much to me if he wins or not. I have thoroughly enjoyed his presidency, but I don’t need it. I survived eight years of Obama just fine. I survived eight years of Clinton just fine. And I can survive the three or four months of Biden that we’ll get, if he wins, just fine. Because, unlike liberals, we conservatives DO NOT rely on government for survival. We know that every individual is responsible for his or her own life and livelihood, and know how to take care of ourselves. We believe in the power of the individual much more than we believe in the power of the State. And that is why we don’t get scared by elections.
Well, we all know that ignorance is bliss…
BTW there are many conservatives that knew and know that Trump was not going to be good for America.
Well, if you are happy, I’m happy for you.
