It’s strange. I thought there were Tolkien fans on the SDMB. But as I search around the boards, I can find nary a thread discussing the books or the movie. I’ve searched extensively through Cafe Society, only to come up empty, time and time again.
You all do realize the movies came out yesterday, right? Fairly large opening from what I hear. Yet, taking a semi-random sample of 41 out of the 50 threads on the first page of CS reveals NOTHING about LOTR or Middle Earth. It’s very confusing to me.
The only explanation I can think of for this phenomenon is that last year there was an absolute deluge of FOTR threads. Probably two a day for a couple of weeks. It overwhelmed the Dopers to the point where everyone got sick of discussing it. This year, it’s clear that we’ve learned our lesson from the mistakes of history. It’s my hypothesis that, knowing this would be a fairly popular topic, posters have actually not started a thread for fear of repeatition.
I don’t understand why this is the case, though. Surely if they had searched around a bit before deciding not to start a thread, they’d have discovered that they would have been the very first person to discuss either the book or the movie The Two Towers. How groundbreaking would that have been, huh?
Compared to last year, there are virtually zero LOTR threads. However, I think the OP was trying to be sarcastic. If that’s the case, I’d suggest another go at it.
… you know, I think the number of “review/spoiler” threads might be almost as frustrating for LOTR fans, like myself, as for non-fans. I mean, now I have to read THREE different threads to get all the goods about this movie that I, sadly, have not yet had a chance to get to. Why can’t all these strangers consider how much easier it would be for me if I could just open up one thread and read it all the way through to get the info? <<sigh>>
