Why Can't I Buy Ephedrine In Ohio?

Every other state I’ve visited or driven through in recent memory pushes this cheap, nasty, legal speed over the counter at gas stations. In my old university town, it was staple pharmacy-and-convenience-store fare.

But you can’t find it ANYWHERE in Ohio- not even in the bronchodilator section at the grocery store.

What’s UP with that? It’s obviously not scheduled, so how come I can’t buy it here?

I’m 90% sure it’s because some bunch of rednecks (or whatever they have in Ohio) with access to the Internet can brew meth with ephedrine (and a few other chemicals).

From a lawyer’s website:

Apparently over the counter sales were made illegal in Ohio in 1994 (that from the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s website).

I initially suspected something along the lines of Rastahomie’s thought, but in searching on the subject I discovered that ephedrine can summon up some nasty adverse physical reactions on it’s own.

… but not as bad as an asthma attack, when a reasonable dose of ephedra could be used as a preventative - it used to be the sole ingredient in Primatene (sp?) tablets.

I have a bottle of X-tra Strength Stim-Con II, Caffeine Ephedrine Sulfate. We had to have it sent to us from Florida. It contains 25 mg of Ephedrine Sulfate and 300 mg of Caffeine. My bf took one pill when we drove from Kansas to Jacksonville, Florida back in January and he drove the entire trip with no problems. We can’t find this stuff here in Kansas either. I don’t think we even have Mini-Thins anymore. Guess people become addicted to them and that’s why they take them off the market. It’s not something you should take all the time anyway… only when necessary.

That John Denver’s full of shit man!

Melatonin, you never did specify if you wanted it for asthma or if you wanted it cuz it has some buzzing affects.

If you take two and you hadn’t taken them in awhile it’ll make your scalp tingle, Mix it with a beer and you get a buzz. The reason you can’t get them in alot of states is cuz alot of people do not use it for the purpose it was intended

Ephedrine is commonly abused as a weight loss aid. It does supress the appetite, but also causes the same effects as epinephrine (adrenaline), and other adrenaline-mimickers like speed.

Numerous deaths have been attributed to it, including healthy active duty service members using it to help them stay within weight limits.

Prescription-type inhalers, while undoubtedly more expensive, are much safer. Ephedrine is bad news.

Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.

Rasta & beatle are both correct. Ephedrine is used to make methamphetamine. I believe psuedoephedrine(nasal decongestant) can also be used in the synthesis in place of ephedrine.

They don’t sell mini thins here anymore, but you can buy ephedrine under a different brand name, the name of which escapes me right now. It’s not pure ephedrine HCl, though. It also contains guafenesin(sp?), an expectorant.

I am the user formerly known as puffington.

Thanks for the info. Though I haven’t looked for it lately (say, in the past year or so) I never recall having a problem finding it in Florida, the local of the university town to which I referred. Although I suppose the law enforcement people in FLorida have more important things to do than enforce the removal of a potentially lethal drug from sale, like busting potheads.

Anyway, I thank you all from the depths of my brachycardic heart. MajorMD, you don’t happen to know what the cause of death in the healthy people misusing this drug was? Something related to the heart, I presume, but what?

So, like, I’m the only one enjoying the IRONY of “Melatonin” inquiring as to the availability of speed??? LOL.

Cardiac arrythmias and hypertensive crisis are cause of deaths that I’ve heard of, IIRC you used to be able to get it mailorder from the backs of magazines like “hightimes” in high doses in ads geared for college students that led to some deaths. Last week we had a woman in the ER with chest pain and palpitations after taking a product called “Diet Fuel,” which contains plenty of caffeine and ephedra, which is an “organic” version. I also know that this combination is available in a product called Hydroxicut. They’re billed as metabolism stimulators, which is true, and contain warnings about use if you have history of hypertension, heard problems etc, which is minimum legal CYA, but they don’t tell you that ephedrine is a fight or flight stimulator that is commoly used in the operating room for patients that are acting badly and dropping their blood pressure. If you do fiddle with the “health food” versions mentioned above, be warned that they can be pretty inconsistent with the kick per capsule, and the same amount may have quite a different effect,
