Why can't I fill this marketing gig?!?!?!

I’ve been advertising for a Marketing Manager for months now and I just ain’t getting the people I want to apply!

It’s in publishing and is a direct mail and brand recognition type of gig. Reports directly to me (Director of Marketing). Pays decent ($45K-$47K). Good benes.

I’d give them lots of independence. We got casual dress every day, Only WORK a seven hour day. AND during the summers leave at 3PM on Fridays!

Now what am I doing wrong?!?!?!?

AAAAHHHHHHH!!!

Have you noticed the stock market recently? We’re in the middle of the best economy in 50 years. People aren’t looking for jobs. Not your fault.

You’re not a dot com.

A media planner who trained under me for 6 months (with no other marketing experience, mind you) was hired as a marketing director at an e-tailer, tripling his salary in the process. With an industry full of stories like this, it’s no wonder you’re having trouble filling this position.

Perhaps if you posted a link to the ad here we could give you some advice on it. What part of the country are you in?

Well, you could hire me. But I want to move to western Washington. Seattle, Bellingham, or thereabouts. So I’d have to have my office there.

We DO argue with the dot coms. Heck, part of this gig is to help me bring us online and go all funky-cool e-commerce.

I’m in Northern VA. Tech heaven. I’ve worked dot coms. I left the one I was at because no amount of $$$ is worth that sort of hours and insecurity. Too many of my colleagues sign on with dot coms that I know are going to fail. Hell, I’ve got two start ups sniffing around me right now but I think I’ll turn them down (and the extra $35K per year) because I don’t think their concepts are solid enough to last past the venture cap!

I repeat!

ARGH!

OK. You asked for it. Here’s the ad.

Marketing and Promotions
B2B publisher of energy and utilities pubs needs marketing manager to handle promotions. 1-3 years of direct mail, branding and corporate partnership required. Responsible for writing copy and coming up with ideas to promote newsletters, magazines and books.

Variations on that have run all over the place (about $2K worth) in the DC area both online and print.

Thoughts?

45-47k?

Wow, in Silicon Valley, the same position pays at least twice, if not thrice that pay!

Hey–I just might’ve sent a resume for that a month or two ago! :stuck_out_tongue: Didn’t you want me…<sniffle>

Anyway, you might consider adding the benefits list to that ad (like the 7 hr days and casual dress)…it goes a long way. My firm’s classified ads are great (and goofy); they say things like “Well, you can’t come to work in your pjs but its damn close…”

Also, are you far off the Metro lines? That seems a slight drawback in the N VA area (IMHO)

Wonder if DCNewsman would be interested? You might want to contact him or SqrlCub…

This whole thread looks like an ad to me.

I don’t think I’m what you’re looking for, but what the heck…

I went to HS in Northern Virginia and my folks still live there. And can you really go wrong hiring Satan?

That’s quite a resume there Satan. I’ll kick it around. Hey, can you get Cowboy Mouth to play a dope fest if I throw one?

And I’d have no trouble having Satan work for me. Heck, I’m in marketing. I sold my soul a long time ago.
