Why Can't I Get To Job.com?

Job.com is a job search website that’s referenced in quite a few other job search sites, but for some reason, I am not able to get there. Google shows this as a legitimate site, but I can’t get there even via Google.

Can anyone else get to Job.com?

Running XP Home and AVG Internet Security. As far as I can tell, AVG does not have this site on a blacklist.

Any ideas?

I got to the login page with no problem from a Google search.

It works fine for me. I just tried. What browser are you using?

Huh!

I get “Server not found” on both FF 3.5.5 and IE8.

Could it be that my ISP is blocking access?

I got there no problem… FF 3.5 on Mac OS X 10.6; my iSP is Rogers in Canada.

Can you ping it from a command prompt? (“ping www.job.com”) Have you checked your hosts file to make sure that “job.com” is not being redirected to a null IP address? Have you had malware that may have left an effect on your computer?

No malware that AVG has spotted. Hosts (C:\I386) has no entries other than “127.0.0.1 localhost”

Running Firefox on Vista with AVG installed, and I can get there without a problem. My ISP is Verizon.

I’ll tell you, at least in my experiences, Job.com has a lot of bs listings. They’ve had the exact same HR job listing up (company confidential of course) for like this past year, and the job is one of those too-good to be true. 45k starting salary, requires no experience. Here most no experience type jobs start at 30 or lower even. I fell for one of their listings once and all I got was some company calling me asking me if I wanted to “get more education” even though it clearly said I was currently working on a masters degree.

So long story short, watch out for phony ass listings there.

Could not ping from command prompt - returns “Ping request could not find host www.job.com. Please check the name and try again.”

Weird.

I just tried pinging job.com and got no response. I remember reading that some hosts disable the ping response. However, the ping command mentioned an IP address (208.17.204.155). Can you get to http://208.17.204.155/ ? On my machine, that also returns the job.com website.

Understood - I’m wary of quite a few of these sites, and not being able to get to Job.com is not a killer for me, but it’s just annoying that I can’t get there - doubly so now that I know that others have no problem.

It seems that my computer is preventing access, but I don’t know why…

On preview, YES Sunspace, that worked for me - I got there! What’s causing that?

Are you on the web at work? It may be blocked by your company.

No - at home. The web is wide open to me…except Job.com.

Sounds like there’s a problem with your DNS service. If you’re on the web at work, your company’s network may be refusing to resolve or pass on DNS requests for known job-hunting sites.

C:\I386 isn’t the location of the “real” hosts file. Look in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.

Petek

Didn’t see that one. I checked and it’s the same. The only entry is “127.0.0.1 localhost”

I can’t see it via browser, or ping it either. The IP address I’m getting is 208.17.204.128. Wonder if it’s doing some clever-ass DNS stuff where it delivers a different site depending on your locale* - or whether its DNS listings are all screwed. I’m in the UK.

*Though DNS couldn’t actually do this, could it?

The hosts file you want to look at should be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Tried that at post #16.
Thanks.

Just as an aside, if you want to test from an external location to see if a web site’s up for other people, you can try: http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
