Why can't I reliably print (HP 2200DTN)

I picked up this printer used. It’s on my network and seen by all systems.
If I got to 192.168.3.222 I am able to access the web page for it.

I’m using The HP Universal Printing Driver PS (v5.0)

Some print jobs come out fine. Others don’t come out at all.

Some times I get a red flashing light other times no lights.

Hook it up USB and see if the problem goes away. I’ve seen a lot of bad JetDirect cards in combination with those printers.

Go into the web management interface and turn off everything that you’re not using. Like IPX/SPX, Appletalk / Bonjour if you’re on a PC network. Also set it to output an error page.

Are the pages which fail to appear particularly complex? If so, try lowering the resolution. If that works, add more memory to the printer and change back the resolution.

Does the page have any useful information? I have a 2200DTN as well, and it will say things like “Ready”, “Paper Jam”, etc.

I have a 2200DTN and have been pretty happy with it - it doesnt get the use it needs to keep it in tip-top shape. The only thing I think it could use is a LCD front panel like the 9000 (which I also have) does. That would help users determine what and where the problem is.

I’ve got the

upd-5_0_1-pcl6_winxp-vista-x64.exe

version installed on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and when something goes wrong with the printer, an alert box comes up on the screen, just above the tray, with a brief description of the problem and a “Click for more info” option.

Do you ever find paper jammed in the printer? On mine, the duplexer doesn’t like to work in cold weather (it’s near an uninsulated exterior wall).

If you don’t have a paper jam, then it is more likely that there was something about the print job that it didn’t like. This could be a request for an odd size of paper (A4, if you’re in the US), a job that downloaded too complex a program to render (try converting the PS file into a PDF before sending it to the printer).

You could override the printer’s unwillingness to either do its job or tell you why it can’t, by briefly pressing the larger button at the front will force the printer to finalize an incomplete page. If there isn’t a page partially processed, it will print the printer’s test page. The smaller button is the job cancel button.

Lastly, make sure your JetDirect card has the latest firmware. There’s a downloadable utility that can scan your network and report back with info on which cards need new software or are obsolete. Visit hp.com and search for “HP Jetdirect Download Manager Windows”.

I will try that tonight when I get back from work

No the pages are not complex. Some are simple web pages with no graphics and some are PDF’s which I know are treated as graphics.

I’m getting no feedback from the printer. It is in front of a window that is cold. I get the same alert box but iot has a yellow triangle in it and a ?

I think that Terry Kennedy is on the right track regarding incorrect paper size/type in the print job. This is a very common cause of what are basically manual feed prompts however the 2200 doesn’t have a control panel to display text messages like some of HPs larger printers (a 4350 might say “Manually feed Legal” or whatever).

There’s a couple places to check:

  1. File-Page Setup

  2. File-Print-Properties (may be File-Print-Setup in some apps)

  3. Under the Printers & Faxes applet, right-click the printer and look under Print Preferences at the Paper tab. See what the default size and type are.

3a. There’s a similar setting if you right-click the printer, choose Properties, go to the Advanced tab and click the Printing Preferences button (it looks like #3 but there’s a fine difference - #3 is a user setting meaning it’s just for your profile while #3a is a global setting meaning it applies to everyone who uses the printer on that machine).

Make sure that the paper size matches what is actually loaded in the tray. I leave the paper type as “Unspecified” (if it’s an oddball type like “Bond” you’ll keep getting manual feed prompts).

Next, take a look at the paper tray itself and make sure that the length/width guides are set correctly - there are little icons molded into the plastic with arrows that line up so you can confirm that you’ve get them set exactly on “LTR” for example. If the tray guides are off just a bit your printer will assume it’s got funny-sized paper loaded. Having something set to A4 instead of LTR is pretty common since the two sizes are very close.

Since it doesn’t happen all the time I’m betting it’s an application setting, thus something like File-Page Setup.

Applicable joke answer:

This is what I do for a living. Driver setup on print servers for 6500+ queues, 40K users. I love the UPD, though we’re still on v4.5, as the environment is huge, and we’ve not seen a compelling reason to upgrade to 5.0.3

You may want to try the PCL6 version, though printing time may be a bit longer on graphic intensive files.

The fix I’d offer, for a non-shared device is to go into Adobe, open the printing preferences, and select “Print as image.” This has always worked for my users, when another fix isn’t available, or workable for some other reason.

There is also a slightly newer UPD version out there 5.0.3, which was released a month ago. This may have a fix for your issue.
