Why can't there be a "Sports and Games" forum?

There has been a lot of confusion over where to put sports/game threads lately. And a recent thread about “what would make the SDMB better” offered rousing support for a Sports and Games forum.

Why would it be considered such a problem to create one?

Sports, games and video games don’t really fit in Cafe Society. But they fit in a very narrow category that doesn’t really work with IMHO or MPSIMS either.

And what would the users of the SDMB have to do to show that a Sports and Games forum is needed?

Please consider this, it is a great idea. I think sports fans & gamers would both greatly appreciate it and I suspect the anti-sports fans will be happy to see us out of Café.

There is enough sports and game threads to justify it, it would relieve Café & MPSIMS (actual game threads) which are the two busiest forums.

I don’t think the volume of sports thread is enough to warrant its own thread, but I do wish they would stay in one spot. Personally I think CS is the right place, since sports is primarily entertainment. But I wish it were more consistently applied.

Not just sports, the idea seems to be Sports & Game subjects and Game threads. There was a rash of Game thread closures in MPSIMS a few months back when a mod just got tired of having too many active game threads. They tend to be high on activity and he decided to weed them out to leave room for other MPSIMS threads.

I disagree. I’d spend plenty of time in such a forum. I think it’s time.

For what it’s worth, I’d like to chime in with additional support for this idea. It would simplify matters considerably to have a single, unified place to mock the Steinbrenner family.

(sorry Jim, but all sports-related posts must contain at least one jab at Steinbrenner. I think it’s a rule).

By “game threads”, do you mean “Insult the next poster!” type threads? If so, I’m not sure in which way they belong in the same (subject-oriented) forum as sports-related threads. Even if you mean threads dealing with game topics, it’d still be weird to see threads about the World Series and threads about good ideas for a game of D&D in the same forum (that isn’t Café Society).

I am not a huge fan either, its okay. I am rather ambivalent about them. George did fire Yogi and made a mockery out of Billy.

Thank was what **Frank ** hinted at several months ago, I don’t think it is as much about then fitting together, as they don’t fit in Café or MPSIMS.

I wouldn’t think game threads like “insult the next poster” would really fit in a Sports and Games forum (I think of those more as “joke threads”), but the various Mafia game threads would make sense there.

And I did a little looking, here’s a list of threads on the the first page of Cafe Society and IMHO that would fit in a Sports and Games forum:

We really need this, Admins. Combine “Comments on Cecil’s Column” and “Comments on Staff Reports” while you’re at it.

Well, combining the “Comments on Cecil’s Columns” and “Comments on Staff Reports” seems unlikely, since Cecil Himself sometimes reads the CoCC and wants the process to be as simple as possible. Having to comb through CoSR would be tedious for him. He doesn’t do this often, but when he does, we want it to be simple and fun to encourage him.

The Sports and Gaming forum seems like not a bad idea. We’ll discuss.

I’m starting to think sports & games should be part of Cafe Society. They are forms of entertainment, like movies & books. I wouldn’t want to see too many “subject based” forums. If we give sports its own spot, then why not give “religion” its own spot, and “politics” and “telemarketers,” etc.?

Then, at the very least, the forum descriptions should be rewritten so there’s no mistaking where a sports or gaming thread should go.

And the mods should be ready with warnings for the “you like sports?” threadshitters.
