Why can't women just sell their babies?

"Hi, I’m Deter Francis Muraci. Is your Grade A baby failing to make its milestones? Have you got a toddler who won’t walk, or a pre-schooler still in diapers? Did you receive a frowner when you were promised a smiler? Call us. We’re the country’s leading re-graders. Make sure you got what you paid for. Special teen rehabilitation rates apply. "

Ooooh!

Welcome to the SDMB, Susie!
You’re the kind of new Doper we like to see: smart, sharp, well-read, & with a wicked nasty sense o humor.
You’ll do fine.

Every time. someone “talks”. like this. it. reminds me. of. Captain Kirk

Are they free range?

Its sad, but all of glee’s “jokes” do come up in the real world. People who adopt kids and then “return” the child. Occationally years later (but often quickly). People who want to know immediately if its “cheaper to adopt two” (it often is as you can use the homestudy again or just have it updated). And the secondhand price is often free - kids whose placement is “disrupted” are quickly placed into homes - often homes the social workers know and trust.
Kaitlyn,

Beginning in the 1980s, South Korea put quota restrictions on the number of kids leaving due to international criticism that they weren’t taking care of their own problem. The upshot is that now South Korea has far more children adoptable than they will let out of the country. Kids the S Korea government has to support. So the “supply” is more than the “demand” and I doubt much baby selling occurs. Although its naive to believe it never happens other places.

Yep, and kidnapping children is worse than selling them.

What about baby oil manufacturers?

Dangerosa: That’s both sad, for the babies who don’t get good homes, and heartening–that they’ve cracked down on baby selling–to hear. Thank you for the information.

A friend of mine told me about the procedure while in college. I don’t remember exactly how she came to hear of it but I have seen people take out ads asking for egg donors before. I believe she found something online, but her case was unusual as she had direct contact with her ‘match’ so she talked to the woman she was donating for throughout the whole process. This was not normally the case, and I did go through the screening and matching process myself and was indeed matched up within a few weeks but I was not allowed to know who I was matched with. Likewise the recipients did not know my name, but they were allowed to see a profile of many details about me.

I just called the fertility clinic she directed me to and said I was interested in donating eggs, and they made an appointment with me to be screened and undergo a few physical and psychological tests. After all the prescreening and stuff I did not actually end up donating, as there are timing issues that you have to deal with to synch up your cycle with your match and it just did not work out as I only had one summer’s window of time that I was available to donate and time ran out.
