FOR SALE: Supermodels' Eggs

“I want my children to be beyootiful. Hook me up one of them internet thingies, Zeke. Them city boys are selling them supermodel genes on that line there on that World Wiiide Web.”
There was an auction today for eggs of supermodels. Is this the strangest thing you’ve ever heard.

Beautiful parents do NOT always produce beautiful kids. But anything that takes money from rich stupid folks is O.K. by me.

But there is something in this that seems wrong. It seems to turn the sperm and egg donation into a cheap celeb game. There are folks that can’t have kids, who could use these eggs.
Can I sell Yasmeen Bleeth’s heart when she dies, to the highest bidder.

No racoons were harmed in the making of this post.

Bizarre. Here’s a story:

Here’s their site:

“Happiness is nonetheless true happiness because it must come to an end, nor do thought and love lose their value because they are not everlasting.”

  • Bertrand Russell

On the Ron’s Angels site, he also spouts his own brand of pop pseudo-science:

“The act of creating better looking, or in some organisms, better tasting offspring (known as Genetic Modifications), has been taking place for hundreds of years. All genetic modifications serve to improve the shape, color and traits of the organism. Every organism is evolving to its most perfect state.”

You’d make more money from other parts.

Isn’t this the plot for the movie GATTACA? Who says science fiction never comes true? Will natural conception become illegal? Or, at least, unfashionable? Horrors!!

I saw this and dubbed it “This Week’s Sign of the Impending Apocalypse.”

Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to relive it. Georges Santayana

Jab1, I’m going to use that for MPSIMS.

No, people in GATTACA still used their own gametes to reproduce. They just made sure all the genetic defects were removed from them first.

Which made me wonder why all the women in GATTACA were so interested in testing the genetic integrity of potential mates – if her mate has bad genes, she can just edit them out of any kids they have before those kids are even born.

Do you get to mate with the girls too? Is that included in the purchase price?

Ron Harris exerts:
“Beauty is evolution. Our obsession with beauty is the reason we are evolving.”

Puts a whole new twist on that evolution in Kansas debate

Are the male supermodels selling their sperm also? It seems to me that if you have the supermodel egg and “regular” sperm than you would get kids that were only half beutiful. If I am going to invest alot of money to have beutiful kids I want the full deal not just the eggs.

When I read about this in the paper I thought, " I bet the husband would like to do her.Especially if it’s gonna cost X amount of money."

Where in the hell are these girls credentials? I wouldn’t want the egg of someone beautiful ( Actually, I’m against IVF for my own reasons -but in a nutshell-other than the fact that the herd should be allowed to thin it’s self out.) But these girls all look like Ms. July in Playboy. Lord, there is a qualification to end the human race right there.

With any luck, the would be child would probably look like the father (say, Bill gates) and think like her.

To quote Groucho, " Whatever it is, I’m against it."

I’m with handy 100%. There’s no way I shell out that kind of dough if I can’t have the egg straight from the tap (as it were).

What would be the point? You’d spend all that money to improve your children’s genetic bloodline, then end up with no grandchildren.

I hate to admit this, but I am a little sypathetic this whole deal. Please hear me out before you start the flame!

There is some chance that, should I want to have children in the future, I will have to either adopt or use an annonymus sperm donner to concieve. Here is the dilema that runs through my brain: I could raise and ugly child, a crippled child, a nerdy child, a snotty child, a mean child, or a psycopathic child. But I honestly don’t know what I would do with a stupid child. I hate to admit this–it isn’t a pretty part of my personality. But it is true. I come from a family of extremly intelligent people, all my friends are extremly intelligent people, I frequent message boards geared towards extremly intelligent people. My interests are all intellectual. I would have a lot of trouble forgiving a child for being stupid–and I would rather have no child at all than end up blaming and punnishing a child for something that was no fault of their own.

To be honest, I can’t see how this attitude is any more morally defendable than prefering a pretty child, so I can’t throw stones at people willing to buy eggs from supermodels.

I went to the site mentioned earlier and I did not see the credentials of the supermodels posted anywhere. Who’s to say that they are supermodels? I haven’t seen them in any top fashion magazine or in runway shows. Plus isn’t it amazing what a great haircut, a little bit of makeup and some airbrushing can do for a picture.

I don’t know much about the success rates of in vitro fertilization with donor eggs but do people under go egg rejection? (similar to graft rejection) Also shouldn’t there be some type of regulation on this type of auction. Do the sellers really know who the egg is going to?

Just a thought…there are so many eccentric people out in this world with access to labs, lab equipment etc. The buyer may be quite eccentric and decide to perform some outlandish experiment on the donor egg. There is so much controversy in regards to stem cell research or research on embryonic tissue. Couldn’t these donor eggs also fall into the same category? People could start experimenting on these donor eggs without anyone knowing about it.

Hope I am not getting off the subject too much but this is my first time posting.

Thats odd, I just went to the site and there are only THREE choices now. I thought there were nine the other day. Guess some of those airhead models finally got a clue?

There is a sperm auction now too.

I am reminded in this context of something attributed to G. B. Shaw (SFAIK, he never denied it, although he always said that the other party to the conversation was not Isadora Duncan):
“But suppose it has my beauty and your brains?”

“Kings die, and leave their crowns to their sons. Shmuel HaKatan took all the treasures in the world, and went away.”

Manda Jo, I’m a little confused. You say you would have little choice but to either adopt or IVF. Is there a biological problem or are you planning on marrying a stupid man?

Shirley–A very smart man, with a physical genetic disorder we agree dosen’t need to be perpetuated.

In that case, I’m gonna throw this Ron Harris person into the same category as J. Michael Straczynski and a heck of a lot of Creationists.

Namely, the category of people who can’t get it through their thick skulls that evolution is not “progress”!! Arrrgh! I hate that particular fallacy! I hate it hate it hate it hate it. Did I mention that i hate it?
