Why Censorship?

Not related to, but could be somewhat.

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=29575 - My link to a site was Censored, because I offended Manhattan. I pissed him off in a post I made, It was deleted in in spite of what I said. Was it stupid what I said, yes. Cry about it.
Any Good Reason?

Stupidity and Offensive is just cleary not a good answer. Just because you find it Stupid, Offensive, Childish and what not, doesn’t mean it should be Censored. For the children’s sake, well fuck the children. Religous, well fuck religion. No, but seriously I want a good clear answer. I don’t go around saying I find BMW’s and your nice and tidey lawns offensive, (which I do) we should not have them anymore. Even if there is or isn’t any Educational value of the censored item, it should still be OK! If a link to a site doesn’t have it’s copyright stuff in order, it should still be OK! Ah fuckity fuck. I gotta shit.

Jokes and Flames will be permitted in this area.

(sigh, prepares to repeat self)

The mods and admins get to say what threads will and will not be closed, deleted, etc, because it is their sandbox. If you don’t like it, take your shovel and go home.

(sigh)

You didn’t answer the question.
The mods and admins get to say what threads will and will not be closed, deleted, etc, because it is their sandbox. If you don’t like it, take your shovel and go home.

I understand that, but why?

Didn’t this happen a week ago?

Actually, you’re the one crying here.

No, it is the moderators and administrators who determine what is to be permitted where. You seem to have trouble grasping this issue in general.

I think manhattan already provided that for you: “I removed it. Because you pissed me off.” As anyone can see in that very thread, you are the only one who seems to be upset by the deletion. In other words, Farmer, despite your whining, no one gave a fuck.

What’s the bottom line? The rules you agreed to follow as a registered member of this board notified you that “We reserve the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever.”

Any more questions?

Why am I suddenly reminded of a little kid tugging on mommy’s sleeve and just asking “Why? Why? Why?”

Farmer - there is no why. This is Admin’s sandbox, and you (and the rest of us) agreed to their rules when you signed up. You don’t like it? Go somewhere else.

You are an invited guest at this party and the hosts can take away your access, at any level, to other guests at any time.

Why is that so hard for you to understand?

sigh It’s simple, Farmer.

Someone who includes a questionable link in an obnoxious post is more likely to get it edited out than someone who posts a questionable link in a neutral post, because it’s more likely to have been posted in an attempt to intentionally disrupt the board and/or (in this particular case) harrass/insult the admins/mods/board members.

Duh.

–It’s called authority. And it looks like it’s something you have a problem with, Farmer.
No. I’m not flaming you. I’m trying to be as blunt and honest as possible.
Officers have authority over enlisted. Employers have it over employees, etc.
Now, let’s look at your first entry and at what I think is the offending area. You stated that anyone who removes the link in your post would be an ignorant F*CK.
Could I remove your link?
No.
The only person who could do that could be a moderator (or an administrator). Therefore your accusation could be interpreted as an insult and a challenge to one or all of those in authority on this board.
And, by golly, one of those mods did take offense and told you he took offense. And he issued a warning.
I read his warning as “Don’t piss off the mods.”
Okay?
Can you see that your line could or would offend a moderator?

The mods have only one rule: Don’t be a jerk, you jerk.

Even that’s a little hard for some people to understand.

Ben? Is that you?

::flee::

<Sigh> ?
What, Farmer’s question was just so exasperating that it barely warrants a moment of anyone’s precious time? He had a valid inquiry. Yes, it is the jobs of the moderators and administrators to keep the message board running smoothly, but does this mean that when someone feels wronged they cannot speak up about it?

I have no opinion on the matter that he/she was referring to, but I don’t like to see people jump down others’ throats.

Here ends my minor rant.

Was he prevented from speaking up about it? I think the existence of this thread dispels that notion. Should he be surprised that his angry expression revealing his inability to get it garners responses to the effect that he doesn’t get it? I think not.

Was it stupid, what he did?

Did anybody bother to spend a moment of their precious time responding directly to his apparent concerns? Yes, see matt_mcl, Alphagene, Kat, Jett, Doug Bowe, et al.

This points up a popular misconception I’ve run into a time or three:

“Freedom of the press” does NOT mean that any schmoe with an unpopular opinion can force the press (the SDMB in this case) to publish it. What it really means is that the people who own the printing press (or other medium of publishing) have the right to decide what to print. This means that a publisher cannot be prosecuted for publishing anti-government opinions (In the US, anyway).

Farmer, if the mods and other people behind the SDMB decided tomorrow that the SDMB was to be no more, as they’d rather host a New-Age Crystal Healing and Occult (NACHO) board, they’d be perfectly within their rights to tell us all to shove off. I can envision a large number of upset people, but squawk as we might, we do NOT have the right to expect that the SDMB continue indefinitely.

In this case, the moderator decided he didn’t like your post, and edited it. They could do the same to me. I suggest that you either learn to deal with it, or find another forum in which to express yourself.

You might find a similar reaction if you went to your friends’ house and criticised them heavily. They’d probably not invite you back soon.
