In jaws, brody pours water on quints running fishing line. why did he do this?
I thought it was to cool it off.
My thought also.
The way the line was running out, that reel was getting mighty hot. Hot metal expands and warps. This is a bad thing.
It’s been a good while since I saw the film, but wasn’t there some steam when Brody poured water on the reel?
Complete fly fishing nerd here. I could watch these videos all day.
Check out the video below of some board guys testing fly reels (drag systems, general material quality, machining tolerances and start-up inertia) by hooking them up to motorcycles. They are trying to replicate the speed and acceleration of large saltwater fish like marlin. Some cheaper reels can seize up, smoke and warp when put under these stressors.
The following is a lower quality reel made by Orvis. The guy pours water on it after it starts smoking to try to cool it down so it won’t seize. Water seems like a very bad idea due to warping.
Got to love the fact that they are doing their best to ruin expensive reels (some costing almost $1000). Boredom, curiosity and access to resources are usually a great recipe for “awesome!”
