Why did Molly Picon die in Lancaster, PA?

For some completely unknown reason, I had an inspiration to look up Molly Picon online today. I knew the name, knew she played Yente in the Topol film of Fiddler, knew she was a big Yiddish theater star in her day, but not much else. And found out that she died in 1992 from Alzheimer’s in Lancaster, PA. Weird…how many Yiddish theater/Broadway stars retire to Amish country? Now, she lived in Phildadelphia in her childhood, but we’re not exactly a suburb of Philly. And she’s buried in Queens with her predeceased husband, which makes her living here at the end more inexplicable to me.

So I ask the Dopers (amongst whom I’m sure is someone who either knew her personally or knew someone who knew her), why was Molly living in Lancaster in her twilight years?

According to her New York Times obituary:

“She died in her sleep at the home of her sister, Helen Silverblatt.”

So, the answer is, she was in Lancaster because her sister lived there. Why her sister lived there, I don’t know.

And I totally missed that line when I Googled. :smack:

Thanks, folks!
