Why did the PETA founder 'free' her dog, and what happened to it?

Ok, putting this in General Questions . . . but it’s close

I saw that HBO documentary about the founder lady of PETA, where in one of the interviews says she used to have a pet (i think a dog) but finally “freed” him or something like that, so now she is pet free.

The doc didn’t mention the issue again, and I couldn’t find anything on PETA’s site.

So my guess is she thought animals are equal? But if so, where did she put her dog? A refuge? Did she buy a small offshore island for dogs? And how would it help domesticated animals if humans dont relate to them anymore? Wouldn’t that cause their extinction? (ooops turning into debate! going to get the boot)

So what the h*ll happened to her pet and why/is it a secret?

WAG: No one knows what happened to it.

If she freed it, it probably became a stray and ended up with the same odds as any other stray.

Or maybe “Freeing” it was a euphamism for “I blew it’s brains out with a '38, freeing it from earthly servitide”
