I know this sounds weird and I’m desperately searching for some evidence but (anecdotally) I’ve read this in more than one place.

Anecdotally I can report firsthand that during sex, many (if not all) Japanese girls make noises like a puppy being stepped on. It’s not just sex either… the voice seems to jump an octave and go all whiny in response to any kind of excitement, anger, fear, etc. I’m not really sure why this is, but I notice that Japanese people like to soften any “real” interaction in order to minimize conflict or confrontation. So going all goo-goo childlike is the safe way to express extreme emotions. This way the sentiment is registered in a way that can be safely disregarded if necessary. That’s just my theory, anyway.
