I’ve known many gay men and i’ve noticed that all of them have an accent. I believe everyone’s heard the joke before, but i want some real answers. Observe:
French, Italian, Indian…etc. people have accents because thier language pronounces letters differently.
Brooklynites, Southerners, Bostonites…etc have accents because of a certain dialect used in their neck of the woods.
So why do most gay men, even though they come from many different places, all have a similar accent??
Some gay men have a slightly affected way of speaking like the character Jack on “Will and Grace” that’s not so much feminine as it is flamboyant … not that’s not it… but it is a distinctively fey style of speech and mannerism that many associate with “being gay”. Many gay men (possibly a majority) do not speak like this at all and there ar even ramrod straight heterosexuals that speak in a similar affected manner, although they are rare.
There is a Realtor in another (competing) office that is one of these “gay sounding straight men” who sells lots of historical homes, and the odd thing is that female Realtors (never male), even those in his own office, make mericiless fun of him behind his back for this gayish “accent”, which they would never do to a real gay men. I do feel kind of sorry for him, but the fact that he’s often a pompous ass, and the fact that the real gay guy in his same office (who also has an accent) is really nice, doesn’t help his case with them.
Could you please point out Rock Hudson’s or Richard Chamberlain’s use of the ‘accent’ in question? They’re both queerer than a twenty-three dollar bill and have impeccable diction.
Peace.
