Why do my calf muscles provoke cries of envy....

…while the rest of my body gets sand kicked at it on the beach?

Seriously, if there had ever been a “Mr Calves Universe”, I coulda been a contender. Why is that? I don’t run, work out, ride a bike or anything. Why are my calves so well developed, defined, toned and buff while the rest of me is so… weedy and under developed?

Don’t tell me it’s genetics. My Dad and my brother do not have freakishly well developed calves - or anything else.

Not what you want to hear, but it’s probably a lucky draw in the genetic shuffle. Most folks who have big calves after training had big calves before they started training.

I’m afraid if you really do nothing at all to develop them, the only reason left as to why they don’t match everything else has to be genetics.

That means nothing at all - some people’s relatives look very similar, and others look completely different. I have a strikingly different size/body type/face/complextion than my dad. You can’t tell genotypes by outwards looks, and even so relatives just as often don’t share a particular trait as they do.

Brain power and an calf appearance may be genetically balanced. A deficit in one could be made up by a surplus in the other.

Surprisingly, according to a physio I once asked (having excellent legs myself) poor posture can lead to putting more strain on your leg muscles than necessary, and lead towelleveloped calves. If you walk by always pushing yourself arround rather than moving with more ballance you can build up pretty strong calves without realising the ammount of exercise you are getting. And aahala I am afraid that one needs strong legs too be able to carry the weight of a big brain arround

I am the same way, I can’t do any serious lifting at all, yet I have very nice defined calves. I can also do a ton of weight with my calves with no problem. You could be like me and walk on your toes, something I’ve done all my life. So maybe you’re walking on your toes and not noticing it.

A bodybuilder once said my freakishly well-developed calves were “a gift from God.” :). I used to think it was because they had to carry a lot of me around, but after I lost weight, they stayed the same. I also noticed that I have practically no body fat on my arms from the elbows down, while my upper arms are quite chubby. Honestly, my upper and lower arms look like they belong to two separate people.

I would buy the walking with more effort explanation for my calves (I am knock-kneed, so that adds creedence), but how do you explain the arms, too? I have had potters and massage therapists ask me if I do their respective crafts because I have such muscle-y arms.
