At point are love handles actually love handles?

I was thinking about the male body musculature and trying to figure out “what is normal? Am I normal?” I was sort of wondering a few things.

First off, isn’t some bulging at the sides normal? As long as it’s not thick alllthe way around the midriff? I was looking at ancient statues and noticed even there was some thick musculatue on the sides. I’m not super-beefy, but I have been trying to improve my health and build muscle (and improve bone density).

Lately I noticed my sides thickened a bit. My abs have hardened, too, although I’ve never been thin enough that I’m going to be one of those guys with the ultimate six-pack or whatever. Still, I want to improve my health and how I feel. What’s normal here?

Second, how to “normal” legs look like. I’m kinda self conscious about them. I can hike or whatever for hours, whatever I do my legs just don’t exactly look like a bodybuilder. Fact it, they’re a bit, ah, shapeless. And always have been. Even as a child, I was muscly but stocky and very self-conscious about it. What’s “normal?”

I know, it’s probably ridiculous. But I’m terrified somehow (don’t ask me why, it’s irriational) that I’m going to have a heart attack or get cancer and die when I’m 37 years old (or maybe 43).

If you have well -developed obliques: http://brianwhitacre.net/Pictures/Thumbnails/Model%20Pics/Obliques1.jpg
You will have some “bulging” on your sides.

For most men, this bulging is just fat.

As to legs, the calves are notoriously hard to develop.

Not true. They just require some intelligence, effort and perseverance, which most people won’t apply because they believe that calves are hard to develop.

I’ve tried standing toe raises as well as seated ones and not seen great results (some, but not much). So far we’ve got the effort and perserverance covered - mayabe my calves are just dumb.

Buttocks are the real love handles.

No, ears.

No, pigtails.
