I like raisin bran well enough, and like the old two scoops ad used to say there’s raisins in every bite. But I also like other cereals and sometimes put raisins in them. But no matter how I mix them in they always end up at the bottom of the bowl. Rice Chex, Corn Flakes, Shredded Wheat, Cheerios even Captain Crunch once. Always on the bottom. How do they do it? Huh? How? How do Post and Kellogg keep the raisins in every bite but mine always wind up on the bottom of my bowl?
They sink because they are heavier (denser) than the flakes. I am not sure why they don’t sink in bran flakes. Maybe those are much denser flakes to begin with. Also, maybe it is that bran flakes go soggy fairly quickly, compared to most other breakfast cereals, and tap the raisins by wrapping around them.
I’m pretty sure the ones already in the cereal are drier than the ones you buy alone. Ever notice the ones in the cereal are chewier and a little smaller? They’re not freeze-dried, but they’re definitely not as dense or moist as the ones you buy in their own package. The sugar coating may have something to do with is. The less dense, drier state makes them lighter, staying distributed within the cereal box better, and don’t sink in the milk once poured into a bowl. If they weren’t dried a little more (and coated with sugar), they would make the cereal become moist and moldy in the box.
