Why do my text windows keep freezing up on me?

I am running Windows XP.

Recently I have noticed that my computer is experiencing 6-7 second “freeze ups” when I am attempting to use various text applications.

I use MSN Messenger, and this is the worst. I will beging typing a message, and then all of a sudden the chat window locks up and the letters I am pressing on the keyboard stop appearing in the window. So I wait a few seconds and then all of a sudden all of the letters I have pressed since the freeze up appear all at once.

It’s even doing it as I write this out now, and it’s very annoying.

It also does it with mIRC, and freeze ups are particularly common on both mIRC and MSN after I press enter.

Eg, I type in the text, I press enter, wait about 6-7 seconds, computer unfreezes, and my text appears.

This is very annoying. Can anyone help me?

I’m gussing you have performance problems due to spyware that was installed on your computer without your knowledge. Try cleaning it up with some of the suggestions here:

I’ve run both SpyBot and AdAware on my system regularly.

That’s a good start. Have you tried CWShredder?

Um. Your computer isn’t freezing, or the text you type wouldn’t be stored in the buffer. Spyware may well be a part of the problem. If it is, ISTM that there will be one or more ports that have been opened. There is a way you can check this. Go to Shields UP! – Internet Connection Security Analysis . The stuff on this first page will probably be of interest to you, once you’ve solved your current problem. That’s why I’m piping you through it - so you can go back to it, but it’s not the test you want at the moment. For that, go to the bottom of the page and click on the Shields UP! link and follow the instructions. When you get to the next page after that, click on the “all service ports” link. It will show you if there is any spyware on your system which has opened a port to send out information on your machine. IIRC, it will offer you help on how to close any ports that are open. It’s been a long time (>4 years) since I’ve seen that, 'coz I alter the access on each computer as quickly as I get it, and before I go online with it.

If you get all green on the ports check, and have otherwise verified that you’re free of spyware, maybe it’s that you’re using software that enters the output of your input directly from your keyboard - or the buffer - across your internet connection (i.e., the software is passing it directly to your internet connection). What kind of connection are you using? If it’s dialup, then the problem is likely in the pipe, which is beyond your control, unless you’re willing to upgrade to a faster connection. If you’ve eliminated both spyware and connect speed as the problem, then the hangup is on the website, which is entirely beyond your control. I recall problems of this sort with Yahoo chat about four years ago. It was very frustrating.
