Help save my marriage.
jeremy evil uses Yahoo! Messenger to chat with his online buddies. We just upgraded to WinXP a few weeks ago. Anyway, at some point or another, when he’s online with Yahoo! Messenger active (which is every time he’s online, but anyway), XP will just freeze - no timed countdown warning, no task manager - and we have to hit reset. When we do, Windows will hang on startup during the XP logo splash screen with the progress bar. The only way to get things back to normal is to boot into safe mode (I find this tends to soothe Windows and make it behave better - as Ritalin does for ADHD children), then shut down completely, power off, power back on, and start Windows normally.
I, on the other hand, will be online - with nothing Yahoo! active - and will never have a problem with XP freezing. So logically, there’s something in either YM or XP that causes a kernel panic or whatever. AFAIK it’s the right version of YM for XP.
Has anyone else had this problem, on either Yahoo! Messenger or another (non-Microsoft, of course) IM client?
(My personal theory is it’s yet another little annoyance that’s been deliberately coded into Windows to force people - out of sheer frustration - to use Micro$not everything. )
