WHY do people go and cover themselves in tattoo's?

Or it could be that those people wear clothes that cover their tattoos.

I have. They just cover them at work.

Or it could be that those who cover themselves in tattoos also know how to cover themselves in clothing with sleeves. It’s not that hard to do.

At my store we had a guy that shopped here nearly every day in a nice suit, nice shoes, well done hair etc. I’d always assumed he was a lawyer based on his appearance. Then one day (presumably after he retired) he started coming in with shorts, flip flops and Tommy Bahama type shirts…two full sleeves of tattoos. Never saw that coming.

I’ve met a few. They either cover them, or work in an area (and with clients) where it isn’t a big deal.

Seriously, people, this subject is dead. It’s like gay marriage, but with far less social implications. You don’t have to “get it” but you ought to accept it. Tattoos aren’t a big deal anymore. People like them. They aren’t going anywhere. Acceptance will only grow from here. You railed, you gnashed your teeth, you told the kids to get off your lawn, but it didn’t work. You lost this battle. Let’s all move on.

It is if you have face tattoos or neck tattoos.

My point is, any serious visible tattoos are a no-no in professional world. So unless you can cover them up, by getting yourself covered in tattoos you’re going to limit yourself in that respect.

I was wondering that too.

There was some nut here a while back who claims he litterally walked out on a woman he was going to bang simply because she removed her clothes and he saw tha she was heavily tattooed.

What does “accept it” mean?

If you mean “accept” in the sense that some people have their quirks and are weird - sure.

But if I come in to a new doctor / lawyer / physician / dentist and I can see he is covered with tattoos - I will find myself a new one.

You don’t see how it could be a turnoff?

Why do the kids now a days listen to such crappy noisy music? Why did your parents not understand how awesome your own musical tastes were? Why do some people like photographs but others prefer abstract art?

Why do you wear clothes? The skin you live in is beautiful and shouldn’t be covered up by garish fabrics.

Just for the record, even in the world of tattoos, many people draw the line at face and neck work.

Also, a lot of people who want to get a professional job will avoid getting tattoos that will be visible. They’ll keep them in places where they can’t be seen. Above the wrists or elbow, below the neck, above the knee etc. Keep at least a T-shirt and shorts on any time a co-worker or client might see you and not have to worry that people are going to judge you because you chose to get a tattoo. It’s unfair that just because someone decided to put some time and effort into choosing a design they wanted, picking out an artist and getting the work done, suddenly their degree and corporate ladder climbing means less to you, but thems the breaks.

What if someone said “Wha…you post on an internet message board…well sir, I’m not going to buy anything from you or hire you as an employee then…good day”

I feel your pain OP but you’ve been here long enough to know that this subject won’t go over very well.

For the most part I don’t really care but it does tend to ruin my preference in porn.

Scene: Million dollar home, beautiful woman in sexy evening gown, perhaps a little reluctant to have sex with this stranger because, you know, she has class and all.

The stranger is slowly undressing her, passionate foreplay, soft focus with warm soothing candle light, everything is perfect and Gravitycrash is getting turned on and then… BAM! Enormous tramp stamp is seen on beautiful womans back. Sigh.

How many people actually have face tattoos, as opposed to any other areas of the body? Seriously now. That’s another thing about these threads – people pull out the most extreme examples they can come up with.

It’s never someone with a small tattoo on their shoulder, it’s always the tattoo lady at the circus.

I thought it was because he just saw one tattoo? Can anyone link to the thread?

My son has around a dozen tattoos, a couple of piercings, and his ears are guaged. He has a good job, is going to school, and is straight edged (doesn’t do drugs or drink alcohol). It is so frustrating to me, to see how many people of my generation (I’m 45) and older judge him by his appearance. They don’t know him, but assume that he is trouble just because of his body art. If they would take time to look at his tattoos, they could see that they are all either beautiful and/or very meaningful to him. They were all very much planned and well thought out. He loves each and every one of them and doesn’t care what others think of them.

You do realize that professional competency is not correlated with how someone likes to decorate themselves, right?

Would you walk out on a doctor because you hated the color of his/her shirt, too?

Just because somebody is expressing themselves doesn’t mean I have any interest in taking time to evaluate it. I don’t think there is any such thing as a beautiful tattoo. They are ugly stains to me.

However, I try not to draw any conclusions from the fact of people having tattoos, I like plenty of people who have them.

I do not ask my physician to undress so I can examine his body.

Most of the time it goes the other way around.

I used to be like the OP, judgemental of people with tattoos. But I appreciate art and I came around. Yeah, I know, not all tattoos are good art, but that’s the motivation, essentially. So, for me tattoos are art and I like art.

Now, that being said, I’m still not there yet with body mod…(but then I feel the same about plastic surgery…)

To me? No, it wouldn’t be a turnoff.

Good analogy. Poetry is like that too. No one says if you like one tat you MUST like them all. Or accept them all. Hell, I don’t like full back tattoos or really any large tattoo, but I accept that other people like them and it doesn’t surprise me.

Why do people like chocolate cake and chocolate frosting? Ugh, it’s digusting and way too much chocolate and will go right to their hips! It’s the same thing!
