Why do peppermints dissolve funny?

I was eating a post dinner peppermint candy when i realized that peppermint candies sure seem to dissolve funny. You know how they get all those little snake holes in them?

Why do they dissolve that way, and not all even like a butterscotch candy?

Do butterscotch candies dissolve evenly either? It seems I’ve cut/caught my tongue on butterscotch candies before.

Your answer is in your question. Snake holes are caused by snakes. Most escape before packaging, but some always remain.

Actually, I think the white part is whipped to make it white, so it is less dense.
