One time, I had a virus on my computer that blocked access to all the most popular sites - YouTube, Netflix, Google, Yahoo, Facebook and so forth. What was the point? What benefit do the virus creators have by disallowing me to access those sites? Is it nothing more than they just want to annoy the heck out of people?
Different hackers can have different motives.
Some are kids just trying to annoy people and/or show off their skills.
Some are ransom seekers who will offer to remove the “ransomware” for a price.
Others are revenge seekers who have some personal or political gripe against the targeted sites.
Then there are the ones who try to make money by getting the traffic redirected to some other site. They either have a financial interest in alternative sites or get paid by alternative sites for hits.
And I’m sure there are others I haven’t thought of.
Some malware will try to prevent you from going to anti-virus sites so that you can’t get rid of it.
