Why does English call Germany by that name? OK, yes, because the Romans called it Germania in Latin and we picked up on that. But why didn’t the French, who in most other respects are much closer to Latin than us? (And where does “Allemagne” come from, anyway?) It’s almost too much to ask that anyone else use the name the natives of a country use, but why don’t we call the place “Dutchland” or some other Anglicization of the actual German name? (No, not Holland. You’re probably thinking of the Netherlands. Holland is a region within the Netherlands. (This aside courtesy of someone who has explained this far too often. ;)))
Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a place dedicated to answering questions like this once and for all for the whole world to see?
Why are there so many names for Germany, AKA Deutschland, Allemagne, etc.?
