Couple of issues with your issues here.
First of all, the whole judgment thing works fine for me. Other ntions do criticize us, and I’m fine with that. Frex, I agree with most of the civilized nations on the issue of capital punishment. We are indeed barbaric here. I don’t agree with circumcision being barbaric, though I don’t really understand why it’s done. Historically, people in the U.S. have done things that are barbaric and cruel by almost any measure imaginable – our treatment of the slaves and native Americans comes to mind here.
I’m not the least bit uncomfortable with the concept of being criticized by other nationals, though I will of course judge the reasonableness of each critique for myself.
as for the situation in the OP, getting bent out of shape over some one else being bent out of shape over a fucking (or not fucking as the case may be) doll is quite bizarre to me. The stuff that sailor posted is something more to get upset about (but it also isn’t seen as the majority pov it would seem, so you may as well get riled over the certain small groups of people out in Utah who practice polygamy, and suggest that it’s a major problem of the US as a whole).
As I understood it, the judgment over Barbie meant the doll couldn 't be distributed in Saudi Arabia, so we’re not talking about the equivalent of a small sect, more like a religious version of U.S. customs, so you analogy does not hold. Further, the thing that really gripes me is their calling it a JEWISH doll, as if that alone made it evil. This puts them squarely in “scumbag” territory. And no, I am not sorry if I sound judgmental.
**** disclaimer: this is not to say that one is never able to say, with conviction that another person is morally wrong. just that I believe we need to be cautious when doing so, especially when it applies to entire cultures, that the situations are clearly defined etc. (for example ‘killing is wrong’ is generally true, but there exist situations that most will agree that killing may be necessary, even morally right. we of course disagree quite a bit where that line should be drawn. **
I agree generally with the preceding paragraph, except that I think some people have become so cautious about judging other cultures (in reaction to a history of fast and easy judgments that clearly came from ignorance and bigotry) that they have stopped engaging their brains when dealing with such matters, opting instead for a wise SOUNDING policy of “let’s be careful here.” If your whole response is to “be careful” without engaging the issue, you’re just ignoring the issue, which is the essence of being … ignorant.
