I was sitting in a restaurant this afternoon with the fam, and there was a TV showing the Spurs-Lakers game that was going on at the time. The camera kept looking over at Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, because we’re all so interested in seeing how they are reacting to the latest game developments.
It just got me thinking: what the hell are these people famous for? Ben did a pretty good job in a few good movies. These movies were sort of popular. It has been years since Ben Affleck was a major part of a decent movie. Jennifer Lopez is… relatively attractive. She has been in a number of really bad movies in which she did a really bad job of acting. None of her movies have been very popular. She’s made a few albums that sell OK, but not great.
So why are these people the constant focus of so much media attention that it makes me think my head is going to just blow up? Who is subjecting us to this? The public is OBVIOUSLY not that in to these people, or at least no more than they’re in to any one of a really long list of fairly famous people. Is this relationship the greatest career move either of them ever made, or what?
Are either of these people making anyone any money? I mean, sure, they’ve got a whole lot of name recognition, but I don’t think there are many people who want to rush out and see the latest Ben Affleck or Jennifer Lopez movie, or buy her albums, or her clothing. If they don’t make money for anybody, why don’t they just go away? Why are we, as a public, force-fed celebrities that we don’t… even… like?
I’m really sick of these people. Felt like sharing. Kept it clean, because it feels like MPSIMS material, but if the mods disagree, I totally understand.
Let’s see, Ben Affleck starred in Daredevil earlier this year, which pulled in over $100,000,000 at the box office and got good reviews.
As for Jennifer Lopez, **Maid In Manhattan, The Wedding Planner, Angel Eyes, ** & The Cell all topped the box office charts, most for multiple weeks.
As for your declaration that her albums sell Ok, but not great, she has 4 #1 singles and and 2 #1 albums and total sales of over 25 million untis, which is quite good considering she hasn’t been a recording artist for a very long period of time.
As for your wanting people who don’t make money for anybody to just go away, where are all of the homeless people supposed to go?
Lopez and Affleck do make money for people, namely the movie studios and record companies.
And spare me the crap about how evil both of those institutions are, because Lopez and Affleck don’t just make money for the executives, but for everyone else at those companies right down to the cleaning staff.
And since Affleck and Lopez’s movies generally rank in the Top1 or 2 slots at the box office when they are released, that disporves your thesis about how not very many people want to go see them in a movie. At least 8 million people apparently do.
Compared to the average Springer “contestant” they’re positively brilliant. Just another sign that our culture is spiralling down the toilet. We’ve recently destroyed thousand of years of cultural artifacts over in IROC but at least we’ve still got Ben & J-Lo.
