50% less annoying than the higher-fat boards.
I’m shocked, shocked to find that tipping is going on in here! ![]()
Because I like message boards and used to read the books. I still catch up on the column from time to time.
If I could find a better message board I’d spend time there. SA wants money, and Giant in the Playground is narrow and precious. Whirlpool is OK for (Aussie) tech subjects. Devoted game forums can be pretty good-- I’ve spent a lot of time on Apolyton and CivFanatics, for example, but haven’t IMO made the leap to quality general interest forums. There’s a couple Excel boards I’ve read, too, but I never posted much, if at all.
Most of those I mentioned have writing with decent clarity and syntax. I don’t see a basis for the idea that the SDMB is some sort of wonder for the unusual frequency of sentence completion.
For the girls of course.
…and like the sign says, to fight my own ignorance ( and unfortunately it is taking a really long time ).

I had to sneak into your room ‘just’ to read your diary
Uff, at least do it right. You’re worse than the real thing.

I come here first because it’s my job to read the Comments on Cecil’s Columns/Staff Reports forum. I’m not the forum Moderator but I do work for Cecil every single week of the year. If there’s something which needs responding I respond to it. If there’s something which needs Cecil’s attention I talk to him about it. Then I browse GQ for questions which might be interesting for Cecil to look at. Then I browse IMHO or MPSIMS to see if anyone is saying anything neat in general. Much more rarely I go to the Pit. I read GD but rarely have the time to spend on detailed replies because my SD time is already taken by Cecil.
I love bitter, joyless, autocratic, arrogant, fascistic, pedantic, geriatric people and websites.
Because I enjoy the conversation. I don’t have large numbers of acquaintances or get to spend my personal time with the kinds of people that I find here - where I can specifically seek out the subjects that I want to talk about right now. I can walk away from the conversation at any time, pick it up later if I want, ignore large parts of it without having someone in my face insisting that I have to acknowledge their point and/or agree with them, and generally pick and choose the moments that I want to interact with.
One of the things I really enjoy, which I don’t get to do too often, is when I find a GQ question on something I’m interested, I will flex my Google Fu and do some research on it, posting my findings. I can also do the same on other subjects within the limits of however much effort I care to spend on it at that moment, to verify what other people say or find other things that interest me.
Likewise I enjoy reading what other people more expert on subjects have to say about things I am interested in, reading people argue things I am only tangentially aware of, and basically informing the fuck out of me and offering new points of view on issues.
I have also been enlightened as to the existence of quite a number of things that I previously had no idea about, such as a couple of web comics, movies, books, food, blah blah blah.
And I find a huge amount of value in that exposure to new and cool things.
Then also, being the persistent whiner and complainer that I am, I get to unload in the pit.
Because there are people here whose opinions I respect.
Because there are contributors from numerous countries in the world.
Because there are doctors, and lawyers, and mechanics, and engineers, and nurses, and technicians, and technologists.
Because there are housewives, and unemployed, and students.
Because there are sports fans, and music fans, and comedians.
Because I can read here and understand what’s happening in the world, and sometimes contribute, and sometimes get shot down.
Because my personal views on Atheism, and equal rights for gays, and non-discrimination are generally upheld.
Because some people are my age and like The Beatles too.
Because none of my friends do Facebook or forward spam through email.
Because, over the last 7ish years I feel like I’ve gotten to know some folks here.
Because I know, it’s only rock and roll, but I like it.
I come here because my mother makes me.
