And of course, there’s sauce and then there’s sauce. I doubt many small cans of plain “tomato sauce” (even those with “Italian herbs” or whatever added) have it, but for the jarred “pasta sauce?” Yeah, probably some or many of those have sugar. I just checked my cupboard and found a jar of Newman’s Own Vodka Sauce*, and sugar is third from the end of the ingredient list, after vodka, garlic, and salt, before basil and other spices.
Yes, I get jarred sometimes. I don’t always keep cream in my fridge, and the amount used in something like vodka sauce** or whatever is very small and means I’ll be throwing out the rest of a carton of cream.
** Of course I always have vodka, though. I have my priorities straight.
My cheapo Aldi’s pasta sauce* (Reggano Mushroom) has 9g sugars in a 1/2 cup serving. Not sure how many of those are added sugar, though - as already noted, tomatoes do have quite a bit of sugar on their own. Since Hunt’s Tomato Sauce has 4g sugars in 1/2 cup, I’m going to guesstimate that there’s an added 5g of sugar per serving in this pasta sauce (which may or may not be more concentrated in tomatoness than plain tomato sauce - hence the “guess”). So that’s about an added teaspoon of sugar in each serving, or 5 tsp sugar in the jar.
On the ingredient list, “sugar” comes after tomato puree, diced tomatoes in tomato juice and mushrooms and before vegetable oil, salt, dehydrated garlic, onion powder, spices, citric acid, dehydrated parsley and flavoring.
*Which I find kind of “bleh” on it’s own, but I use to add Stuff to because, in complete contrast to pulykamell’s style, I like a long simmered pasta sauce for my default pasta sauce, and can’t quite get satisfied with a from scratch sauce. So “my” pasta sauce ends up being about 1/4-1/3 bottled stuff by volume, with additional onions, garlic, meat, spices, crushed tomatoes, tomato puree and tomato sauce. I know, I know, it seems like at that point I could just leave out the jarred sauce, but it adds a certain “something” that I like a lot and haven’t been able to otherwise duplicate (and no, it’s not simple MSG. Tried it.) Probably something that will make me grow a third eye eventually…
Well, I did make a long simmer “kitchen sink” pasta sauce on Thursday. It’s great for using up leftovers. Ham, ground beef, pork, chicken, plain tomato sauce (no added sugar on ingredients list, and never had 'em), Oregano. Mmmm…
Ok guys I saw something in the grocery tonight I just had to come here and complain about and judge people HARSHLY about, I’m talking hard core wrath of god judgement here!
From Pillsbury small plastic bags of frozen scrambled egg chunks, like pre scrambled frozen eggs with chunks of veggies/cheese/sausage. :smack:WTF are you kidding me? You have to throw these premade scrambled eggs into a frying pan anyway, you might as well break some fresh eggs into a pan and toss in your choice of cheese/veggies/sausage.
SERIOUSLY?! Pre scrambled eggs? C’mon guys this is just embarrassing, they’re going to make fun of us in Europe for this.
