Why does it seem more pleasurable to add voice to a yawn then not?

If you know what I mean… Wookie-like wails and howls just seem more satisfying.

I’m not sure but I’ve been personally trying to curb that behavior through negative reinforcement since it is annoying. Anybody who begins to add voice to a yawn in my prescence gets an immediate slap across the face mid yawn which promptly stops them and I get this reaction>>
It seems to work since they never do it again.

yeah, my wife haaAAaaaAAAaaaates when someone yawns and adds a vocalization, hates it to the point that her response is unpleasant enough to throw an entire social event off its mood.

It doesn’t bother me, but even if it did, I can’t imagine letting that anger fly against people who aren’t trying to hurt me. I think the “instant rage at loud yawners” phenomenon is at least equally as interesting as the OP.

A WAG but the reason you’re yawning in the first place is because your body wants to get a bunch of air out. Another way you get a bunch of air out of your body is by making a loud noise. So making a loud noise adds to the yawn.

I learned to stop voicing a yawn in a 4th-year inorganic chem class in college - the prof jokingly but correctly dressed me down for implying he was boring!

It does fell better to howl, though.

If that is actually true, you are going to get what’s coming to you one of these days. I just wish I could be there to see it.

SMACK!!

I don’t know for sure, but I would wager that adding something to a yawn is more satisfying than just letting it be. You can stub your toe, and in response let out some kind of sound, but it’s just more satisfying to swear and take it to the next level. So, it’s like you’re trying to get the most out of the experience. Again, that’s just a guess.

As an aside, dogs do the same thing when they yawn. So, it must be something innate

On a related note, why do some people vocalize their sneezes? I’ve never understood this one. My dad, for instance, absolutely SCREAMS out his sneezes. At work, there’s one woman who works clear across the building from us, who adds such a loud “CHOO!” to her sneezes that my coworker will sometimes dial her phone extension and say “bless you!”.

I never vocalize my sneezes, but I am guilty of adding a subtle bit of voicing to a yawn. I don’t know why, but I have noticed I don’t really do it when I’m alone.
