Why does Japanese Cuisine (seem to) use no tomatoes?

It just a occurred to me that an ingredient doesn’t need to be used in Japanese cuisine to be popular in Japan. Curry powder hasn’t been incorporated into British cuisine; even though curry is one of the most popular dishes in Britain.

I can think of one use of cooked tomatoes in a Japanese dish that I remember: In yakitori or kushiyaki restaurants that have a lot of vegetable offerings, skewered and charcoal-grilled cherry tomatoes are a common dish.

And I don’t like cats much… but even I have to admit that was a cool cat.
