I used to bitch when it went past 99 cents. Was there a huge locust plague in the lettuce growing part of the world that I don’t know about? Drought? Floods?
Can someone clue me in on the economics of lettuce?

I’m in Indiana, but the produce sections here all seem to have signs that say (paraphrasing here) “The weather is really sucking where this stuff is grown, that’s why it’s so freaking expensive. Go buy some yogurt.”
Well, something like that. Yesterday lettuce was down to $1.99, I think.
Maybe spring will bring in some cheaper stuff.

The price of lettuce in NY is determined by supply and demand.
From USA Today:
Thank you rsa.
Damn, I love this board.
I just paid 1.29 for a head yesterday. Why the difference?
Food Lion. Mid North Carolina.
Only $3? A few days ago (also in NY) it was up to $4.
Current prices in the Seattle area:
Safeway 2.19 a pound.
Fred Meyer 1.99 a pound for the crappy stuff, 2.99 a head for the marginally better looking stuff.
Albertson’s, 2 for $3, looks like crap.
Even the chopped bagged stuff is over $3 a pound. Wife and I have been eating a lot of the leaf lettuce lately.
Haven’t bought any lately, but the last time I glanced, it was over $2.00 a head here in So. Cal.
Im near Salinas, California & it was 2.99 head. May be cheaper now. Thats for iceberg, other types are indeed quite a bit cheaper.
