Every time I eat something really sour, I involuntarily close my left eye. It’s always just the left eye, which seems really strange, I’d find it less strange if they both closed or if sometimes the right eye closed and sometimes the left eye closed. Does anyone know why this happens?
Got nothing. Just wanted to mention that I’m eating some kiwis right now and that I was reading parts of your post with my left eye closed. What a coincidence.
Perhaps… Do you know this painful cramp in your jaw that you get when you take the first bite of something sour, that feels as if your saliva glands are trying to squeeze out every last bit they got? Maybe this is a related reflex, some sort of ‘gland massage’ to get the stuff in your mouth diluted down as quickly as possible. As for why only one eye, I’d guess that sitting in trees and eating fruit with both eyes closed couldn’t have been exactly a survival trait in our ancestors. ← Never was this smiley more appropriate.
Interesting. Does it close like you’re blinking, or close like you’re winking?
Nothing so subtle for me. Think Popeye.
Me too! And always my left eye. Weird. Also, my left eye is the only one I can wink with (I can only close my right eye if I close both of them), so maybe that has something to do with it.
Valete,

Me too, and it’s always the left eye.
And here’s something else: My ophthalmologist tells me that my right eye is dominant (to determine this, you look at something through a hole in a piece of paper, and notice which eye you are using). Except that when I’m taking pictures I look through the viewfinder with my left eye, because it’s easier for me to close the right one. Of course the solution is to eat something sour while I’m taking pictures.
Yeah, that’s about how it is for me too. I’m sure I look ridiculous.
I’m glad I’m not the only person this happens to, I was kind of worried that it might just be me.
