Why does my milk smell like beer?

As a single guy, I have a lot of experience with spoiled milk. Usually it has a sharp smell and it’s sour. But for some reason, the milk I bought last week has gone bad with a beer-y smell. That was my first thought on smelling it, I might be more yeasty in retrospect. Not even past the expiration date either.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yeast infection?

Don’t put monostat in your milk.

Milk tends to pick up odors from the refridgerator.

Did you spill anything in there? Beer maybe?

Vegemite?

Pour some of the milk into a hot cup of coffee. If curdled fats rise to the top of the cup, then it’s gone sour. If it mixes smoothly, it’s most likely still good enough to drink, provided the odor doesn’t ruin the drinking experience.

I would try that experiment, but I threw it out immediately. I can deal with slighly soured, but weird and funky are not for me.

Guess this is just a mystery for the ages.
