I have a Magnavox TV that is less than one year old. For the most part I love it, however I have had a problem with the sound since the day I purchased it.
The audio sounds perfect when I’m watching a DVD or playing my Gamecube. But when I’m just watching TV it sounds awful. Fuzzy, with a background whine. I often have to turn the volume up to #40–50 to even make out what is being said, whereas a level of 10-12 is perfectly sufficient when it is on DVD/gaming. I don’t get it–the components are all hooked up using the same kind of wires (A/V wires with the little colored caps) so why the difference? My cable comes through a converter, not just from the wall, if that makes a difference.
Any techno types want to help me troubleshoot a bit here?
These things can get quite nasty to diagnose. (I’ve just found out my new stereo and my TV makes a nice ground loop squeal when hooked together. So far tried 3 different connection methods to get around it. None worked. Ugh.)
You don’t say how you switch between sources.
If you have an external switch box, there can be a problem there. If you have a TV with multiple A/V inputs, read the manual. (Seriously) If you are using an auxillary device like a VCR then try taking that out of the path.
It could be the cables.
Also check the settings for your TV, cable box and your DVD setup menu. You can set some devices to handle dynamic range differently. DVDs tend to have Loud Music so some people set things up so that the DVD volume is more consistent but then other things don’t sound as good. Also, my digital cable box has a “default/movies/sports…” setting for audio. Many TVs also have such settings now.
I had the same problem and found that the method at the bottom of this page worked for me. The last picture on the page near the bottom is the one. I found the parts in my junk drawer.
