Why does the background color on my computer screen keep changing?

I have a Samsung flat-screen monitor, age unknown, and just in the past few days, it’s been doing this. TBH, I have a feeling that my cat bumped something (it’s happened before) but I can’t seem to fix it.

Maybe nothing really NEEDS to be done; it’s just weird that this is happening?

What do y’all think?

I have a Samsung monitor and one of its features is an “eye saver” mode which slightly changes the color temperature based on how much whitespace is shown. If it’s turned on you can see it shifting colors very slightly as the screen content changes. I found it to be distracting so I left it off.

Windows has a similar feature called “night light” that can activated manually or set to turn off during certain periods of the day.

I think both of these features have the effect of making the colors less blue, or “warmer.”

Perhaps the cat loosened the VGA/DVI/DisplayPort/HDMI cable from the PC to the monitor? Check that it’s still well seated.

May not be the monitor, it may be your OS (macOS or Windows) which have dynamic desktop/wallpaper images that change based on the time of day to be darker/warmer as you get into the evening/night.

I’ve had the monitor for a long time, and if it did that, it never did before.

I really think my cat bumped the buttons in the lower right corner, and altered something. She likes to rub herself against that screen while I’m online (although she’s not there now).

That was my thought as well. Partially removed VGA cables would result in losing certain colors. However, I WAGing that’s not the case for DVI or HDMI.

Regardless, you (OP) should quickly check to make sure both ends of the cable are fully seated.

VGA cable is VG.

I had an ASUS that did that. It was some sort of factory test mode. I followed the instructions to get out of it but it only worked for a short time. Rinse and repeat. I wound up replacing it.

Cats and monitors are not a good combination.

She’s never tried to bite it; she just rubs against it, which is annoying enough.

How is the color changing? Slowly fading? Changing all of a sudden? Are colors missing? Does it look, for example, like the red, green, or blue channel are suddenly missing? Does it come back to normal? Is it changing through the rainbow? Is it just a matter of color temperature? (Going from warm to bluish white?) What model is the Samsung? What OS are using?

Also, when you say the background color is changing, do you mean the foreground stays normal? In other words, describe what you mean when you say your background desktop color keeps changing, because that can mean a lot of things.

When I sign on, it’s the usual cyan color, and after about 10 seconds, it switches to a more olive-green tone. It doesn’t really matter all that much, but I was wondering why it happened.

Plug it into any other computer you have access to and see if the problem moves with it. If so, the monitor is dying!

This is my only computer. I agree, it’s probably on its way out. They aren’t that expensive, so I’ll probably get another one soon.

You still haven’t answered the bulk of @pulykamell’s questions so we don’t even know if this is a monitor thing or an operating system thing.
