Why does the straight dope drain my battery?

A few times a week I noticed the battery on my Galaxy S5 was dead by lunchtime without me even using it. I noticed when it was happening my data upload and download arrows would be lit up solid at the top of my menu. Thru the process of elimination I found it was the internet. Further I figured out it was the dope. I can view the sight then hit the home button, stick the phone back in my pocket and it sits there trying to communicate with the server for some reason. Doesn’t do it every time but is doing it right now. I have either restart my phone, close the Internet in task menu or reopen Internet and close the straight dope tab. This only happens on this website and no other. What gives?

I notice that you are a guest and not a paid member. That means that you have to “pay” in the form of viewing ads. This web site is constantly reloading and refreshing ads, It also occasionally has video streaming ads that run constantly (anyone remember the Israeli vampire TV show that streamed in one of the windows?).

I have learned that when you are done reading a page here, you should close the tab or browse to a different tab. Don’t leave a tab open to the dope on your device. Even if data streaming is not a problem for you, some of the ads that get loaded have malware in them. Everyday, I get redirected to a fake firefox update page from some ad here.

I have found it to be a good practice to turn off my data if I’m going to put the phone to sleep for a while. This isn’t like putting it in airplane mode. I can still receive phone calls and texts with the data shut off. Even if you’re on wifi most of the time, this will save your battery from running low.

I don’t mind visual ads. But a few weeks ago, I noticed that the SD’s ads sometimes suddenly go to audio. It averages only once a week, but it drives me nuts, and if it gets worse I may come here less often.

I would also suspect ads. Possibly something gets stuck, and keeps your processor running at full speed.

I have an app on my phone that will turn the processor down anytime the screen is off. I also have another one that will let me catch a runaway app that is stealing the CPU. (Usually YouTube or the mediaserver, which apparently chokes on invalid files.)

I figured it may be due to the ads. After posting I clicked the straight dope header to go to the homepage. Got the usual pop up page. I close them before they even open all the way. This time I got a file download of some kind. I viewed it and it appeared to be an empty pdf. Ugh. Ads I don’t mind but some of these ads seem loaded with malware. Does anyone actually click on them? If so what were Don Knotts (barney fifes) dying last words?

Yikes!

If you get some kind of download from an ad, do not open it.

I use Firefox with an ad blocker and I see no ads here at all, no blank spaces, nothing but the posts. My older computer has a fan that runs faster the more the processor works. Often when I click on a thread, the damn thing revs up like a jet taking off, and it takes a long time for the thread to appear (if it ever does). Even if I close the attempted tab, the processor stills runs for a long time. I always wondered what it was.
