Why doesn't Netscape like my website?

I don’t want to get into a flame war, but
a) coding for different browsers is a pain in the ass for all but the simplest pages.
b) writing in xhtml will not solve matt_mcl’s issues. at all. It’s still an excellent suggestion that he work on writing clean code, but it will not solve the issue at hand.
c) <marquee> is not an “idiot tag”. It’s not a good idea to use it, since NS doesn’t support it, but it’s clearly a valuable feature, not “idiotic”.
d) A couple of folks have mentioned style sheets. Style Sheets are rad, unfortunately, the NS problem is magnified with them. In general, it’s such a bummer to write a nice page using standard stuff and watch NS corrupt it.

BTW, hansel, you’ve indicated twice now that xhtml would solve the problem. As you can see above, I’ve actually taken the time to modify the pages, and my conclusion is you’re mistaken. If you really believe you’re correct, I encourage you to redo his page yourself. It’s a simple enough page, and if you’re correct, I’d love to learn something.

I’ve looked through the code, and there are a few issues:
[ol]
[li]Mozilla repeats table background images in each cell, while IE doesn’t. The solution is to nest the table with three cells inside another table of the same size. Put the background image on the outer table.[/li][li]Mozilla just doesn’t support the <marguee> tag; there are javascripts that will do the same thing. As far as I’m concerned, it is an idiot tag, both aesthetically, and because it’s not part of the HTML standard. Therefore, you take your chances with it.[/li][li]Mozilla doesn’t respect attributes like topmargin or leftmargin in the body tag; once again, they’re not part of the standard. This causes the background image of the table to fail to match up with the background image of the page. The solution I found was to put style=“margin: 0;” in the body tag.[/li][li]Matt specified a height for the top right cell, but not the cell below it, which allowed Mozilla to use its automatic portioning algorithms. This was solved by adding a height attribute to the lower right cell.[/li][/ol]

I corrected these problems, and got the same layout without the scrolling marguee (the text was simply displayed).

Making the pages xhtml compliant wouldn’t have solved these problems, at least not without the addition of style tags to replace the no-longer-standard attributes, but it would’ve gone a long way towards making them non-issues between different browsers. With the changes I made, IE and Mozilla display them identically.

Thanks, whitetho, but the webpage I have listed at the sdmb is the personal one that my SO put up and maintains. My webpage is located here: Lola’s Cupid Website. And yes, there were TONS of errors. I actually did the website so I could learn HTML. Apparently I didn’t learn very well.

[sup]Note: not a money making website, just a fan site[/sup]

Not bad; the only real problems I saw were unenclosed <center>, <font>, and link tags.

Since I got the time, I ran it through Dreamweaver Ultradev 4 and cleaned it up for you. Here’s the result:

      • I posted in MPSIMS a while back, asking why Netscape had gotten so lousy from a user’s standpoint: a year ago, I distinctly remember that it ran faster than IE5 and it would display many pages almost completely where often IE5 would only give an error.
  • Now it’s the other way around: Netscape 4.7 usually takes longer to get a web page on my PC than IE5.5 does, and Netscape often hangs and doesn’t get anything at all. I kinda prefer the user features of Netscape 4.7, but if it doesn’t display the web pages there’s not much point. I almost always use IE5.5 now, and only try Netscape when IE can’t display a page.
  • Even so, for me IE5.5 was a pain in the *** because if it ran into a Java error, it would automatically open the webpage in the Visual J++ debugger. I turned off all the Java debugging options but it didn’t matter. (Yea, I know, I had to have it, I had a course that used it. Anyway, it’s gone now).
  • Netscape 6 is didn’t download properly for me the first time I tried, and it was too big to bother trying a second time. - MC

I guess why my dislike of Netscape reaches religious proportions is because I liked version 2 and 3 so much. For the time, those were beautiful programs. Stable as hell, feature rich, etc. 4 just blew it for me.

However, I can’t ignore it because roughly 20% of the traffic to my business’ site is still on Netcape…

HI matt, you might want to try this site, it’s pretty nice & run the test they have:
http://websitegarage.netscape.com/

There are also web sites that run your code & clean it for you but I don’t have any URLS.

I’d take that site with a rather large grain of salt–I plugged in Netscape’s own homepage, http://www.netscape.com, as the URL, and it gave itself a “poor” rating.
