Why doesn't TRL play entire music videos?

I happened to catch about 5 minutes of TRL today and in those 5 minutes they went thru 3 videos. They showed about 1.5 minutes of each.

Now these are videos that people call in to request to see. If there is any show that I would think MTv would break their rule of “no videos” it would be this one. What the hell is the point of having a request show and then not playing the videos? Or, even worse, only playing 2 minutes of a song and during those 2 minutes overlay the video with lots of screaming from teh “Crowd”.

Now, I don’t think these are great songs or anything, but for gods sake at least play the videos that these crazed teens request. IT is, after all, the name of the show.

(Also, when they DO play videos late at night all they play is booty music and shitty dance/ rap crap music.)

A lot of people (especially teenagers) watch TRL everyday, or almost every day.
There is really no other show like it. This is not meant as a compliment, rather that the other music stations, such as VH-1 or BET, are far less popular and their viewers are often a different crowd. For many people, MTV is the one and only “cool” music station.

So, if TRL plays only short video clips, its audience probably doesn’t care much, as they’ve already seen most of the videos yesterday and the day before…often everyday since they first made the list. To keep things interesting and fast-paced, they mix just a little of each video with crowd stuff, interviews, etc.

Plus, the shorter the video clips, the more time for commericials. As stated before, MTV has almost a monopoly on this kind of thing, so they can afford to fill up the time with commercials. Many viewers don’t see any other equal option and will watch anyway. I am mildly interested in popular music from time to time, but I can’t stand to watch TRL because of the ads. Sometimes I swear there’s more commercial time than show time.

Because MTV sucks.

Has anybody seen this commercial for MuchMusic? It features two geeks in shorts and TRL T-shirts explaining why they think it’s bad for a music video channel to run too many videos and to show what few videos they do run in their complete form. This thread brought this ad to mind.

I would have loved to been a fly on the wall in the executive board meeting where the concept for MTV’s sister channel, M2 was proposed.

“You mean a channel that shows nothing but music videos 24 hours a day? That’s revolutionary! Why didn’t anyone think of this before!”
