Why don't I ever see any YouTube ads?

I watch a lot of YouTube videos, and people in the videos sometimes talk about the money that they generate from the videos, always mentioning ad revenues, so I know they exist. Why do I never see any ads? In a sidenote, I occasionally build computers for folks and after a clean install of windows, to test the sound, I will surf to YouTube and play a video, and there will always be ads coming on.

What am I doing wrong or right on my own personal computer so as to never see ads? I mean, it’s not like I want to see ads, but I’m curious as to why I don’t, and perhaps, the thought just entered my head, am I depriving the video creators of ad-derived income?

Ad blockers block YouTube ads.

heh if you feel guilty just slip them a few bucks through Patreon or their clubs … but believe me be thankful you’re not hitting ads because since yt started their premium services they’ve gotten downright obnoxious with them

I concur with nightshadea.
if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

I wonder if by “ad revenues” they also mean to include the product placement-ish stuff?
e.g. a throwaway line like “I personally use Baphomet bodywash, link in the description”, you might not even notice as an ad, but plenty of people will go there and click, and it tends to generate more revenue than interrupting the video to show youtube algorithm commercials*.

  • The in-video ads for a direct sponsor of the channel are a different kettle of fish, of course. But the OP would have noticed those.

Using AdBlock Plus, that must be it

I suspect they profile all of us and send more ads where they work.

Like you, I see very few ads, and the ones I do see, I skip within 100ms of the “Skip” button appearing. We have an ad blocker at the gateway (Eero’s ad blocker) that acts like a “pi hole” but I don’t think that’s doing much with YouTube ads.
My wife sees multiple ads in every video she watches. She complains about them and I mumble something about how I don’t see any. I’m not sure why she gets so many, but it might very well be because she doesn’t skip them as aggressively, or her demographic responds better to the kind of ads they show.

Meanwhile, for me, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is right.
