You’re right ArchiveGuy. I guess they can’t do PG Genesis forever.
It’s wasn’t very good satire, I’ll admit. Pretty bad by SDMB standards, but doing it at the time, and the reactions since, have been amusing to me too.

Tony Banks has a few solo albums, and also did an album with Fish, formerly of Marillion.
Agreed. Steve Hackett is the primary reason I much prefer early Genesis to later. His guitar solos on “Ripples” and “Firth of Fifth” give me chills every time I hear them, and “The Musical Box” just flat-out rocks*. I always toss his name out whenever there is an “underappreciated guitar players” thread.
Fish has done vocals for a couple of tracks on a couple of Tony’s albums; they haven’t done an album together.
This, I must confess, is me. I far prefer the post-PG Genesis. I’ve heard most if not all of the albums from the PG era, and meh. Just doesn’t do it for me. I personally know only two PG-era Genesis fans, a pair of brothers, my cousins, and that’s not the only thing we disagree on.
Don’t know a single female who likes the PG era Genesis.
Here’s a slight thread jack, but related to the “prog is a sausage fest” idea. I went to see Tony Levin play at a small club a while back and there were literally 5 women in the whole audience. During intermisson, the line to the men’s room was about 20 deep while the ladies’ room was empty. Having seen women do the opposite many times before, I ducked into the ladies’ room and used the facilities. On my way out, one of the 5 women present caught me and gave a weird look. I said “c’mon, you’ve done it before” and she laughed and commented on the lack of females in the audience.
In my experience a good part of the audience at The Musical Box shows are couples in their 40s and 50s. But there are definitely more men than women.
I did enjoy them doing A Trick of the Tail. Less bombastic than the shows with Gabriel as frontman, but certainly something I wouldn’t have been able to see otherwise.
Just another few datapoints - I and my buddies were pretty big fans of early Genesis and PG, but had no use for the Phil Collins crap.
One Phil Collins project that I found worthwhile was Brand X. Their first two albums were quite good. I saw them (w/out Phil–he was touring with Genesis) at UC Davis and they were incredible.
I sent this thread, in an amusing “look at this” fashion, to a male friend of mine who is definitely an early Genesis superfan. We’ve gone to the Musical Box concerts pretty much every year (except this year, ahem ahem). I enjoy the music too, and I’m a chick, but he introduced it to me. Anyway, he’s been bugging me about why I didn’t add him to the thread.
Anyway, here, I added you to this thread, pushy friend who keeps instant messaging me. HIM! HE’S A DUDE AND HE LIKES EARLY GENESIS!
I’d like to use this somewhat amusing thread to let the world know that some of those early albums (Like Nursery Cryme) are now finally available, and remastered on iTunes.
I just bought (lost my CD ages ago & didn’t have a digital copy) Nursery Cryme & so far it sounds quite good. I’m thrilled just to have it again.
Oh, and for a data point, while my wife wouldn’t call herself much of a fan…she will & has gone to Musical Box shows with me…and thinks highly of them. Of course, my wife owned every Rush CD before we were married, so she’s pretty cool with Prog rock (she likes Pink Floyd too.)
My wife’s previous boyfriend was hugely into PG-era Genesis, but he was barely male and in no possible definition of the word a “man”.
