It was a great show. It was at the old Ocean State Theater in Providence before it became the Providence Performing Arts Center and way before it got extensive renovations done to it. The roof still leaked and it was raining heavily and there was some question whether the show was going to go on since they were finding rain puddles on the stage!
It finally went on … three hours late, but definitely worth the wait. They did the entire “Lamb” album and then “The Musical Box” as an encore.
Me too. I started listening to Genesis around the same time as you, Bwana. By the time I could go to see them, Steve Hackett was also gone (but I did get to see him with GTR).
Same here - saw GTR in New York. Hackett sort of opened the show with some of his stuff. Blew me away when he went into the beginning of Blood on the Rooftops.
I saw that show too, in Kansas City. I’d seen the tour before that one too, Selling England By The Pound.
If Gabriel and Hackett were going to be part of it, I’d fly to the ends of the earth to see it. No Gabriel, no Hackett? No tickee for me. Not that I don’t love Rutherford and Banks, and even Collins sometimes (I stuck with them up to and including Abacab) but a non-Gabriel/Hackett reunion just doesn’t interest me.
A better bet, if anyone gets a chance, is to see The Musical Box, a Genesis tribute band who are phenomenal musicians, and who re-create Gabriel-era Genesis shows down to the last note (no kidding!) and costume. It’s not the boys, but it’s the closest thing most people will ever get. I’ve already seen them do the Lamb tour twice, and it was EXACTLY how I remembered it. Better, strangely, in a way, because I was so, um, high during the real concert that I missed a lot. Also, when I saw the real Lamb tour, I hadn’t yet bought the album, so I was unfamiliar with the story, lyrics and music, and didn’t understand at all what was going on. I loved it, of course, it was electric, but boy was I confused. When I got the album I played it to death and learned every bit of it by heart. It’s still my favorite Genesis album, so I was able to appreciate The Musical Box’s show and cherish it.
In a couple of weeks The Musical Box will be back in Chicago playing two nights. The first night will be the Foxtrox show in its entierty, and the 2nd night will be the Selling England show in its entierty. I’ve already bought tickets to the Foxtrot show, but I still don’t know if I’ll have the money to go to the 2nd show. I wanted to see the Foxtrot show since I discovered Genesis after they toured that album. A ticket, including service charges and $2.00 TicketFast delivery, was $54.something. Ouch, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
We had a hell of a time finding parking. My friend had an ankle injury so I dropped him off in front of the Beacon Theatre. I then went on a hellish ride around many neighborhoods in search of a spot (all the lots nearby were full).
I parked in front of a funeral home and was actually considering putting a sign in my window saying “At Funeral”. I got disgusted with myself and was just about to pull out when the car parked in front of me (and not the funeral home) came to life and pulled out. I zipped in that spot thankful that I didn’t have to spend the night worrying about being towed.
There was a King Biscuit Flower Hour CD of that GTR tour (not the NYC gig), but it didn’t capture the magic of that night.
They still have 4 New York state dates to come. Peekskill, NY on the 22nd, NYC on the 24th and 25th, and Johnson City, NY on the 30th. What’d you miss? Buffalo, Schenectady or Westbury?
Wait, I just realized that Westbury (on Long Island) hasn’t happened yet.
Thu Nov 9 FOXTROT Westbury, NY US Westbury Theatre
Fri Nov 10 SEBTP Westbury, NY US Westbury Theatre
Wen Nov 22 SEBTP Peekskill, NY US Paramount Theatre
Fri Nov 24 FOXTROT New York, NY US Tribeca Arts Center
Sat Nov 25 SEBTP New York , NY US Tribeca Arts Center
Thu Nov 30 SEBTP Johnson City, NY US Magic City Music Hall
I just went to the Cleveland SEBTP show last weekend. It was awesome.
Question from every single person at work: “You’re driving all the way to Cleveland to see a cover band???” They just don’t understand.
I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I’d rather see the Foxtrot show, though, because I’d rather experience Return of the Giant Hogweed than Battle of Epping Forest any day of the week.
I understand. I once traveled from Kansas City to Detroit/Cleveland/Cincinnati to see the Genesis Duke tour multiple times (it was worth it too, even though I ran out of money and had to hitchhike home, which led to the most bizarre coincidence of my life which I won’t get into in this thread).
I’d rather see the Foxtrot show because Foxtrot is the first Genesis album I ever bought and I played it until there were no more grooves and the needle would just slide across the album, and it’s still my 2nd favorite Genesis album (with SEBTP a close 3rd) but “Hogweed” (which is actually from Nursery Cryme) is one of the very few Gabriel-era Genesis songs I don’t like. I adore “The Battle of Epping Forest” though. Like many of their songs, it plays like a mini-movie in my head, and I think it’s hilarious, like a cross between The Godfather and The Marx Brothers.
To each their own… but Hogweed is one of my all time favorites.
It’s important to remember that these concerts are recreations of the tours following each of the album releases. So the Foxtrot and SEBTP tours contained material from their prior albums as well. The show I saw included The Musical Box, Watcher of the Skies, Horizons, Supper’s Ready, and The Knife in addition to much of the SEBTP material. This isn’t much of a spoiler - the set list is a matter of public knowledge…
You made me go looking (I don’t know why I hadn’t ever looked before) and no, I didn’t find any, but I did find a short but interesting documentary! I just about fell over too because it starts out interviewing an old friend of mine who I hadn’t seen for a couple of decades, Armando Gallo! He wrote the definitive biography of Genesis and is a phenomenal photographer who’s followed Genesis from their very early days. I think he quit them around the time the album “Genesis” was released (I recall him saying “They didn’t even bother to name the fucking thing”). He’s always been a huge Peter Gabriel-solo fan, and also a Kate Bush fan. I met him at a Genesis concert and the last time I saw him was on New Years Day in 1984 (Orwell Day), when we visited him at his home in Los Angeles. He moved back to Italy and I lost track of him. Oh it was so nice to see him again!
Anyway, the documentary is good too, and will be a good intro to TMB for anyone who doesn’t know about them.
