Why don't people believe in God?

Yep if he is real then he has messed up, if he has messed up then he should probably do something about it. In the past when he messed up he was more than happy to blow cities up and start again (Soddom etc).

Timo, I have a serious question for you. The Bible is a great book written a long time ago by a bunch of different people. On this we agree.

You are quoting the bible and I would like to understand why you think your view (which I assume includes rapture, young earth creationist type ideas) is so different to other bible believers. Are they all wrong and your sects view is the only one that is right?

As a reference I suggest you read or listen to the following:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=westboro+baptist+church&page=2

Both of these disparate views get their ideology from the bible.

On another point you spoke about opening the bible in a point of need and finding the perfect text to help you through. May I suggest you read a book that I found life changing. Illusions “the adventures of a reluctant messiah” by Richard Bach. He speaks to this directly.

The novel features quotes from the “Messiah’s Handbook”, owned by Shimoda, which Richard later takes as his own. A most unusual aspect of this handbook is that it has no page numbers. The reason for this, as Shimoda explains to Richard, is that the book will open to the page on which the reader may find guidance or the answers to doubts and questions in his mind. It is not a magical book; Shimoda goes on to explain that one can do this with any sort of text.

Oh, but he does, and doesn’t. Take your pick.

Technically, Soddom was constantly committing all kinds of sins, far worse than we see now.

So you’re saying if you commit murder, it’s God’s fault?

It’s like saying I committed murder, and I’m going to blame it on you.

Here’s an example of why others don’t believe the claims of the religious about their god:

Witnessing for Church of Hank

Often you’re going to read in the bible, that it is this god committing the killings, or ordering many of his favorites to carry it out. There are 613 laws of Moses. By breaking quite a few of them, even something as simple as gathering firewood on the Sabbath carried the death penalty.

No it’s saying that god gave us free will but when we exercise it he kills you.

Temptation comes from our desires. Just because you’re tempted maybe by let’s say…lusting…again…does that mean that God should strip away all the boys or all the girls so that you won’t be “tempted?” If you hated this one person that it would make you want to kill him, does that mean God should just erase that person because it might tempt you? No, that wouldn’t make sense. What’s going to be there is going to be there. Tempting is a desire of ours. Now a better example of a trial might be waiting for acceptance letters from college. You have a good GPA, you were a president of a club, you did a sport, you wrote great essays. Yet somehow, you were deferred from the school you wanted. Why? Karma? Just how the world works? or God? maybe I was wrong before. Maybe God just tests those that believe in Him. I don’t know…

Well, to be fair, they probably weren’t going to repent…or I don’t believe God would have done that.

But yeah, this is the type of topic that I still don’t fully understand…so…yeah…

Hahaha. That was pretty funny. I wonder if we’re allowed to quote it here in full? Timo doesn’t strike me as the type who’ll bother to click on links.

haha well quite humorous. But then again, you’re comparing God’s love and wanting to build a relationship with you to kissing ass…

Kissing ass to win a million dollars?

Or loving a God who loves you to win eternal life…

So Timo back to my question, why is your view the one that is right?

Good on you for making me eat my words. Not so good on you for failing to understand the very obvious parallels. Replace Hank with God, kissing ass with prayer, million dollars with loving relationship, beating your ass with hell, town with world, and you have exactly what Christian proselytisers do.

Why in the world would I want to have eternal life?

I want it so I can know what happens. I hate the thought of really cool things being invented(teleportation would rock), or aliens showing up, or something, and missing it because I’m dead
Of course it’s quite likely that research will extend human lifespans significantly at some point in the medium term, but it’s probably not going to happen within my lifespan. Doesn’t mean I’m any more amenable to religion of course.

I don’t believe you’ll ever understand unless you can have your own personal experience.
But I think I covered all that I can cover, until I know about other religions, and more about my own, I don’t think I can say anything else to try to persuade you. I tried my best to explain through the previous posts, but obviously, they haven’t made any impact. Maybe ask that same question when I have time to test my belief. Maybe through studying other religions, and maybe through trials that God hurls at me. But I think I’m done for now.

It’s been an eye-opening experience talking to you guys though. I did learn from it. And of course, thanks for taking your time on this thread.

I’ll let you know when you do it - and do it honestly. That means you can actually explain the other side.

Nope - on PLATO from 1975 - 1977 when I left Illinois. PLATO had the first instant messaging, (term-talk) the first message boards (pad) the first MUDs, the first multi-user interactive games, and some of the first touch screens. Oh, and the first on-line newspaper, for which I wrote a Star Trek column.

But thanks for falling into my trap. :stuck_out_tongue:

If that’s all you have, then your personal experience has no relevance to anyone else. Why should anyone else believe what you believe if they don’t have the same experience?

But you can have those experiences…
but that requires a leap of faith

If you don’t take that leap of faith, you won’t ever know what I feel.
If you don’t know, then you’ll never understand.

Again, I’ll come back some time later to see if learning other religions can help in strengthening the reason for my belief, which it probably will.
