Here’s one atheist who makes a clear distinction between the two. Heck, if a Christian chose to self-describe as fundamentalist, and tried to live his or her life by such strict tenets, but didn’t feel called by God to cram said tenets down everyone else’s throat, I’d respect that person as a sincere Christian too. People here like you, Polycarp, Siege to me are admirable examples of living one’s faith with Christ’s message of love foremost in their dealings with others.
One of my best friends is Christian. (Ha! It’s about time one of us godless heathens trotted that one out, eh?) I consider her a saint on Earth – not because she’s vociferously devout, or patently pious, or a regular churchgoer – she’s not. Well, she’d go more often to church if the severely disabled foster children she takes care of left her the time. Nope, she’s earthy, often profane, and far from sinless. But she’s also loving, kind, generous, and a hearth at which all who love her, or need love, faithful or not, can warm themselves. I’m pretty sure she’s against abortion, but she doesn’t preach about it. She has too much respect for others to demand that they follow the path she’s chosen to a good life. I wish every Christian could be like her.

Jon Stewart’s Daily Show last night did just that. They had video of a guy at the counter-rally screaming into a megaphone at the women. The rantings went something like “it’s real simple, SUBMIT!, stay at home, go back to the kitchen, not that hard, etc…”. On a 1-10 scale of sheer craziness, while Whoopie might rank about 4, this guy was clearly an 8 or a 9. I would have said 9 or 10 but he didn’t have some sort of elaborate uniform or clown makeup or something on.

Every day on the way to work, I drive by the anti-abortion crusaders, hanging out on the sidewalk in front of the hospital, with their signs with pictures of dead fetuses.
I very badly want to stop the car and go up and tell them that I’m pregnant, single, and broke. (I AM single and broke, but not pregnant.) I want to ask them if they’ll pay my rent, buy diapers and food, and also a $500/month daycare bill for the baby. Do you think any of them will say yes??

I’m a nobody on this board, a nonentity whom no one knows or cares about, so you can ignore my rantings if you want. But though I’m a relative newbie, I actually lurked for some time before signing up last December to post, and I’ve read an awful lot of threads from both self-professed pseudo-Christians like you, and those who actually try to follow the path of humility and compassion that their Lord laid out for them. People like Siege and PolyCarp and dozens more – they don’t seem to seek glorification as Jewels Without Blemish – they simply act as they would have others act towards them. They are among the best “advertisements” for Christianity here on the Dope, and I have tremendous respect and admiration for them. No Christian-hating for me.
In any event, as a wise, compassionate fellow Jew once said some years back, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” I suspect that an admitted fornicator and murderer such as vanilla had better put down her burlap sack of rocks.

Christianity is not about accepting sins. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” ring any bells for you? And this ‘truth’ you say you’re telling, is your truth, the Judeo-Christian truth, not scientific fact truth. You need to keep that disctinction clear.

vanilla I really have to say this just doesn’t seem like you. Truly, prior to this your views have seemed rather instructive to me (a non-Christian) rather than intolerant. Your posts lately make me view you as another intolerant fundie and I’m wondering, is there something going on behind the scenes? Is everything okay?

Acyually, the chap who paraded outside of the clinic I escorted at waved a (really crappily made) doll that had been run through on a steel skewer. And had a hard on for polyester and something that gave him wicked breath.
Between him and the stupid hag who shouted into her bullhorn (as was pointed out earlier, let technology work for you) my weekends were endless fun and frolic.

Some would. My mother contributes generously to a charity which helps women both before and after the birth of the baby. There is some overlap between people involved in this charity, and people hanging out in front of clinics. (The overlap does not include my mother, thank goodness.)
I’m glad, but why this sudden personality swerve? Were you lying to us for the last year or so? I can’t believe that, as your posts tended to be very open and friendly and even-handed.
