Why dont you see white dog poo anymore?

Has pet food drastically changed in the last twenty years? does it just get cleaned up quicker now? have dogs themselves changed in some way?

Whats going on here?

Uh…was there a great “white poo phenomenon” twenty years ago that I wasn’t informed of? As far as I know, it’s a rather brown item. Maybe if poo is left out in the sun too long, it becomes dried and white, but I generally tend to pick up my dog’s business long before such a transformation can take place.

You’re telling me that you used to see only white dog turds and now, suddenly, one day you wake up and go outside and every piece of dog crap you can find is brown? Sounds like a government conspiracy to me.

The only time I’ve seen white (anything) turds outside is when parks services has come by and sprinkled some compound on the waste to hasten its decomposition, but I didn’t really see that all that much. Lately I’ll have to admit that I haven’t been paying close attention to the local canine fecal matter deposits, and I don’t really plan on changing that habit.

Ya know, now that you mention it, xanakis, you’re right! Used to be a lot of white (obviously not just a result of laying around a long time), but I’ve not seen it in ages. Of course, when I was younger and running through a lot of people’s yards and other places outside, I may have come across a wider variety of dog shit.

Changes in dog food may be a good start…

Come on over, we got white poo.

Actually he’s right - I’ve seen less and less white dog poo too.

Yep, I remember ivory bratwursts lying about everywhere when I was younger. I can’t recall seeing any recently…

…weird…

Just a WAG (and yes, I do seem to remember it being more prevalent); could it be that with various municipalities introducing sanctions that the stuff just doesn’t get to lie around long enough to mature to the white stage anymore?

changes in the tablescrap diet.

note that our collective memories of white flaky dog doo (it was called “doo”, not “poo” back when it was white) also coincide with white bread. Now everyone eats the darker whole wheat kind.

what? you thought your kids were eating the sandwiches you made them?

I can only guess it’s bones. When I used to give my dogs bones, their poop would be white for the next day or two. Since the vet has banned bones from their diets, no more white poop.

When I was a kid, our dog’s poo would turn white after sitting out way too long. So I’d guess it’s the whole “pooper-scooper” phenomenon.

And yes, “Pooper-scooper Phenomenon” would be a good band name.

When my Dog spends time gnawing on bones, her poop is white —well, light greyish, but white enough. These days, many people don’t give their Dogs bones because they don’t want to supervise them. You ought to take away the bones if they splinter them, so they don’t choke or perforate something with a shard. And of course, this would be beef or pork bones only; NEVER chicken or other bird bones.

IMHO, a lack of white pop on display is due to greater use of kibble and canned Dog food as opposed to table scraps. Table scraps aren’t the best thing you can feed a Dog, anyway.

When they voted for the new color (blue, by the way), they had to eliminate one of the old colors. White went bye-bye. You still occasionally see white at Christmas time, but that’s all special ordered and it goes fast.

Actually, it was common among dog-food manufacturers for a while to add titanium dioxide to their dog-foods, which had the effect of turning the dogs’ poo white. This was a deliberate thing - supposedly it made the poo more visible, and thus less likely to end up on the sole of some poor unsuspecting shoe  I presume that when various dog-lovers got hold of this information, they kicked up enough fuss that the dog-food people stopped doing it. Don’t know what side-effects titanium might have on the internal workings of your dog, though.
