Bernie has chosen to adopt a socialist label which is highly unpopular.
He will campaign on a platform of abolishing private health insurance which is also unpopular and affects a huge number of voters.
He has adopted highly unpopular positions on immigration which is an important issue for many white working class voters who he is supposed to win back.
He wants to ban fracking which is unpopular in PA.
He has said nice things about Castro which will annoy many voters in Florida.
There is no guarantee that all this will cost Bernie the race and Trump is also unpopular and sometimes stupid. However it’s not a wild guess to think that Bernie will be a weak general election candidate once voters are pounded with attack ads about his unpopular positions as they undoubtedly will be. His likely weakness is just a logical inference from well-known facts about how US politics works.
I’m starting to think a Bernie/Harris ticket could be very strong. Or Bernie/Abrams?

Here’s an article from the NYT that looks at various estimates of Bernie’s plan. It might end up costing less overall, or even costing more. I don’t think anyone knows what it will cost, but maybe this gives a reasonable range of views from well-informed sources. Of the 5 estimates, 3 said it would cost more, 1 was about break-even, and 1 said decidedly less costly. Take your pick.
The unpopularity of socialism and various other Bernie positions is based on solid polling not conventional wisdom. You can choose to ignore it but then don’t be surprised when the whole thing crashes down in November the same way the Jeremy Corbyn bubble burst last year much to the shock of his supporters. I have been reading some of their Twitter accounts and wouldn’t you know it they are all immensely excited about Bernie.
The same “solid polling” shows Bernie with a comfortable and steady lead over Trump. But this early, that polling doesn’t mean much. I’m not ignoring anything - I recognize the possibility that this stuff may really hurt Bernie. I just think the other candidates have weaknesses that are greater and more likely to result in a loss. IMO, and it’s just opinion, Bernie, socialism and all, is the most likely candidate to beat Trump.

I know that it isn’t what you’re saying. But it sure sounds like you’re arguing that the best approach is the one that is as close as possible to the one that just lost in a historically embarrassing debacle. It sounds like you are relying on conventional wisdom, in a very unconventional and unwise time. Wisdom like how Trump had a ceiling, and no Rubio / Cruz / Bush voters were going to flow to Trump, and the blue wall was going to wall bluely, and Trump’s demographic weaknesses in bla bla bla were inevitably going to kneecap him. “Well-known facts about how politics works,” all of them.
The thing is, when you have an election, a bunch of people decide individually whether or not to vote, and who to vote for if they do. That’s it. If you don’t give them reasons, they don’t do what you want, mostly. When they have reasons to, they do things you aren’t expecting, like vote for Donald Trump. Democrats have not done well at all at the “this is the reason” part. Sanders has reasons. Trump has reasons. Trump didn’t poll well. He still doesn’t, particularly. And if you polled people on a hypothetical person like Obama prior to them knowing about actual Obama, do you think he would have polled as a two-term Democratic president? I think he certainly would not have – black guy with a name that doesn’t sound like any name they’ve ever heard “bellowing” at them about how he’s going to “change” everything? No chance, imagine when the Republicans bla bla bla, they would (did) say. But then Obama (and Trump) made a pitch, and they had an election, and people decided, which is how it works.
I think it was inevitable that, as Democrats leaned harder and harder on what they perceived as their advantage with statistically “centrist” voters, and played harder and harder defense, on the theory that moderation beats extremity and they don’t have to put themselves out on any limbs (see Biden’s “nothing would fundamentally change” and “go vote for somebody else”), less moderate positions would become more and more popular. And now here we are. Stuff is changing, and Democrats are, like, mad that somebody is pitching “their” voters a new reason to vote.
The polls I’ve seen for much of Bernie’s [proto] platform seem pretty popular to me. No time at all today to go and dig them all up, but we have the dreaded “S” word, which by itself may not poll well, but actual policies seem more supported.
