Back when I had long and thoughtful discussions with today’s “RINO’s,” (say, 1980’s - 2000’s) I understood this correlation between religion and political party preference.
Since 2016, however, I’m utterly and completely baffled – and not just a little repulsed – by it. It’s wildly paradoxical.
Rather than me painting all people of faith with the same broad brush, I’m pointing to quantitative data with a reasonable degree of differentiation (even more can be found at the linked site) and expressing my bewilderment.
No, absolutely WITH sarcasm. I never say “Happy Holidays”. I say “Puppy Holidays,” which brings some confusion so I have time to walk away. Sounds cuter too!
Is that the breed of dog or the shoes you are talking about?
Aside: When I did go to El Salvador to visit family, I usually got my Hush Puppies shoes from the local ADOC shoe producers (good quality too!). Not anymore, as even in the old country the shoemakers are getting the shoes from China nowadays. -
Thing is, Democrats including Democratic Presidents do get regularly bashed as anti-religion, atheistic, or outright Satanic with little effort to argue against that even from themselves. It doesn’t matter if they go regularly to church or wear their religion on their sleeve; if they are a Democrat then they are anti-God.
They get regularly bashed for everything. Obama wasn’t even American. Hillary was involved in multiple murders and a child trafficking ring. Biden ran an elaborate criminal enterprise that stretched across the globe. If Democratic presidents tried to react to every evidence-free fantastical slur the right threw at them, they’d have no time to do anything else.
A favorite far-right nutter response to being told that some piece of garbage they’re spewing is false, is to say “well, how come Fauci/Gates/Obama haven’t sued over these claims?”.
Riiight - if you’re not willing to spend a fortune trying to drag liars through the courts resulting in even greater public attention to their bullshit, iT mUsT BE tRUe!
Even ignoring that letting themselves get smeared as non-Christian is politically a very bad idea in a deeply religious nation like the US, they aren’t the only ones involved. There was almost no effort from anyone on their side to debunk such claims, from Democratic operatives down to random people on message boards like this.
Which is how somebody like Trump can get the mantle of being the pro-Christian candidate while running agaisnt a former Sunday School teacher like Hillary.
The Christian organizations who get involved in politics are the fundie/evangelical types who are into politics over religion. And they’re going to support the authoritarian.
Saying, “No he’s not really a Christian, the Democrat is!” That’s useless and the Democrats knew it.
It’s not remotely a fine line between “I hate people who force their religion on others” and “All religions are bad and anyone who belongs to one is deluded and dumb”, and while the first view is common enough here (even amongst the religious), the people here who fall into the second camp are few and frequently challenged. In other fora the anti-religionists are a lot more obnoxious than they are here, and more numerous.
That said, it also remains true that a noisy right-wing minority have done an increasing amount of damage to the image of Christians for all sorts of reasons. But we all know that already.
Agreed. Though I don’t see Christians as persecuted in this country nor do I feel that way. It’s a very safe country to be a Christian in, pretty much anywhere, despite the noisy ones making Christians look like asses.
No? Historically they’ve been all over the map. Look up “liberation theology”, for example. Or the role of the Quakers in issues like Abolition or women’s rights.
The difference is that in the modern US, every position but that of the “fundie/evangelical types” is ignored.
