No wonder people disappear from this place. So many people just jump on here to slam others when they post. Yesterday was a very frustrating day due to ONE particular student, so I looked up rants about students and this thread popped up.
Frankly, I didn’t care that it was 13 years old. I was tired and frustrated and the original post made me laugh. While most days I love my students and love teaching them, yesterday was not one of those days, so I felt like venting a bit too, anonymously. Thought that was what this place was for.
Maybe all of you should try teaching for 20+ years and see if at least a few days during all that time you, too, don’t want to vent. Heck, at least I came here to vent and didn’t bring it home or take it out on my students, who for the most part I like, but most are not prepared for college anymore. It’s sad more than anything else to be a witness to how the United States educational system is going rapidly downhill. Just look at how poorly our students perform compared to other nations. This was not the case 20 years ago.
I know why don’t all of you bitching that this is a 13 year old thread try to find a solution to our nation’s deteriorating educational system. I can tell you now, the damage has already been done before these young adults reach college.
Chill out, ferchrissakes. You may not care if this is a 13 year old thread, but this board administration does. Ask a mod if you don’t believe me. They’d rather have you start a new thread to bitch about what you want to bitch about than to dredge up an ancient one where you’re basically yelling at people who don’t even post here anymore.
Not in the Pit. Didn’t seem to notice that? If the administration did really care about zombie threads in this forum, Miller would have already closed it. I have seen this happen with another zombie too; Miller didn’t close it. So yes, it is pointless for you (and others) to bitch about this thread being 13 years old.
Right because asking that people take their negative energy and turn that energy into something positive is idiotic in your mind. Kimballkid, emphasis on kid, you don’t have to read this thread if it annoys you so.
So why don’t you take your negative energy toward your students and redirect it into curing restless leg syndrome or something. You’re just wasting time flapping your yap here. Those shaky legs aren’t going to calm themselves, you know.
I am with DandyDo. Stop getting so butthurt over the resurrection of this zombie thread. This isn’t GQ, GD or IMHO (and other forums) where zombie threads get closed; it’s the Pit. And besides, DandyDo resurrected it with an actual post that actually contributes to the thread.
Ok, point taken but I am not a professor ranting about the idiocy of her students.
(I have a problem with semi-colons, this I know. I put them where they don’t belong and just generally use them much too frequently. But I can stop whenever I want! It’s under control.)
Screw the rules; use them like 19th-century novelists did: as rests are used in music because their writings were intended to be read aloud. A comma equals a quarter rest, a semicolon equals a half rest, a colon a dotted half rest, and a period, or full stop, a whole rest.
DandyDo, the Pit is not for the faint of heart, and new members are usually discouraged from venturing here. Don’t take any of this abuse personally; just take heart in how students have not become less hateful over the past half of a generation. (looking around) And neither have some of us. I, for one, am still the pompous windbag I was 13 years ago.
